BOULDER—Colorado's sophomore Naghede Abu kick started her 2016 campaign at the Portland State Tournament in Portland, Ore., with a great first weekend, averaging 1.62 blocks over three matches, to help CU get off to a 2-1 start.
Abu started off the weekend by recording three blocks in CU's season opener against Texas Tech. She followed up that match with a record tying performance in CU's five-set marathon against the host team Portland State. In that match, which CU eventually dropped, Abu recorded 15 blocks, which tied Lisa Soulliere's record that was set in 1989. Abu also added 13 kills and hit .417 on the way to her first career double-double.
The weekend finished positively for both Abu and CU, as the Buffs swept Long Beach State in their final game of the tournament. Abu lead the way for CU adding another three blocks to her weekend total of 21, and she lit up the court hitting .692 with nine kills and no errors on her 13 attacks to wrap up a great start to the season for Abu.
Also receiving a nomination for CU's athlete of the week was freshman goalkeeper Jalen Tompkins, who set a new freshmen record for saves in a game with 12, the old record had been 11, in a 2-1 overtime loss at Missouri on Sunday. She also played a spotless 59 minutes off the bench in CU's 1-0 loss at Kansas on Friday.
