May 02, 2016 | Men's Golf

This week's Athletes of the Week are Dani Jones (women's track and field) and Jeremy Paul (men's golf).

BOULDER -- This week's Athletes of the Week are Dani Jones (women's track and field) and
Jeremy Paul (men's golf). Jones set the freshman record for the 800-meter run on
Sunday night at the Payton Jordan Invite, clocking a time of 2:05.27. Paul tied for
seventh at the Pac-12 Championships with a 67-68-74-73—282 effort, helping CU to
a tie for sixth place.

Jones placed fifth overall in the fourth section of the 800-meter run. She ranks third
on CU's 800 all-time performers list behind Olympian Jenny Simpson (2:02.54) and
Lee Ballenger (2:03.7). Her time is 28th nationally and is seventh in the Pac-12.
Paul had the best score and finish by a Buffalo in the five years CU has been a
member of the Pac-12 Conference: he topped his own twin brother Yannik's 285
score last year in Pullman, and topped David Oraee's 12th place effort at Tucson in
2014.

Paul was essentially consistent across the board, tying for the most eagles (two) and
the 19th-most birdies (14) to go with 41 pars. He played the par-5s at 8-under (fifth
best) and had just one hole worse than bogey all weekend (the field combined had
226).

Paul's 282 gross score was the best in school history for 72-hole tournament,
topping John Lindberg's 284 in the 1987 New Mexico Tucker Invitational; the latter
remains the best in relation to par (4-under). The 2-under score in relation to par
tied three other performances for the best 72-hole postseason effort: Hale Irwin in
the 1967 NCAA Championship (which he won), Bill Musselman in the 1968 NCAA's
and Ben Portie at the 2002 NCAA's.

Paul saw a couple if impressive streaks come to an end with the 74, including the
school record for the most consecutive rounds in the 60s (seven), as well as the
most in a row under par (also seven; he tied that one which he set himself as a
sophomore). He also scored a double bogey on No. 16 – ending an incredible run of
202 holes without one, and still has only two holes worse than bogey in 18 rounds
this spring.

It was CU's second best finish in the Pac-12s since the Buffaloes joined the
conference five years ago – only a fourth place finish in 2014 tops this year's effort.

Also nominated for this week's honors: Kelsi Garrison (lacrosse) and Pierce Murphy
(men's track and field).

Garrison scored her first career goals and had a team-high seven ground balls and
also caused a turnover and won a draw control in two games for CU at the MPSF
Tournament. In a quarterfinals win over Oregon, she had a goal and two ground
balls, while adding a draw control. In a semifinals loss to No. 9/8 Stanford, she had a
career-high five ground balls and also caused a turnover. In the two games, she led
the Buffaloes to a 7.00 goals-against average.

Senior Murphy became the eighth fastest Buff in the 10,000-meter run on Sunday
night at the Payton Jordan Invitational, clocking a finish of 28:48.79. Murphy placed
20th overall in a field of many professionals and was the second highest collegiate
runner, as well as the top American collegiate runner. Murphy's time leads the Pac-
12 Conference and is fifth overall in the NCAA Division I.
