Buffs Notes: Ross With Another TD, Julmisse With Another Takeaway

September 10, 2016 | Football

ANOTHER SCORE FOR ROSS: Colorado wide receiver Devin Ross hauled in his second touchdown catch of the season in Saturday's 56-7 win over Idaho State. Ross nabbed a 15-yard scoring toss from Sefo Liufau to open the scoring, and he finished with three catches for 27 yards.

Ross now has 11 catches for 124 yards and two touchdowns in two games.

"I just feel like I've matured as a player and I've gained a lot of trust from my coaches," Ross said. "They feel comfortable giving me the ball more this year."

NICE DEBUT: Wide receiver Kabion Ento, a junior college transfer, made his first catch as a Buff a memorable one. Ento grabbed a pass from Steven Montez on a curl route over the middle, broke a tackle, then raced 69 yards to the end zone for a touchdown.

"Impressive," said Buffs wide receivers coach Darrin Chiaveroini. "He's going to play more because of that. He's earned himself more playing time for what he did out there."

'D' IT UP: The Buffs defense is off to a strong, make that very strong, start.

In their first two games, they've allowed a total of 14 points -- the lowest two-game total since 1978, when CU allowed just seven points in each of the first five games.

"I feel like everything has been clicking defensively," said sophomore linebacker Rick Gamboa. "We have everyone healthy, we have a good rotation going everywhere from the D-line, linebackers and secondary . . . right now everyone is just playing their hardest. Everyone is trying to play as good as the guy next to him."

CU has allowed just 124 passing yards in two games, with opponents averaging just 1.78 yards per attempt.

'O' ON A ROLL: CU's offense has gained 500-plus yards in back-to-back games for the first time since Nov. 9-16, 2002 (575 at Missouri in a 42-35 overtime win, 518 against Iowa State in a 41-27 win). The Buffs rolled up 597 yards of total offense against Idaho State.

"We have shown ourselves that we can be consistent and put drives together," quarterback Sefo Liufau said. "I just think we're executing more and at a higher level . . . we hold ourselves to a higher  standard."

EXTENDING THE STREAK: The Buffs' streak of games with a turnover reached 15, which leads the nation.

That number was hit on a third-quarter interception by freshman Tony Julmisse, who called his first game at Folsom Field "definitely fun . . . I'm just doing my best in the moment, trying to help the team as best I can."

Julmisse has two takeaways in two games, as he had a fumble recovery last week vs. Colorado State.

CU's five turnovers gained in the first two games are tied for the second most in any first two season-opening games ini the last 20 years. The Buffs had six in the first two games of the 2005 and 2013 seasons.

FIRST CAREER ACTION: Seven players saw their first action as Buffs on Saturday. The list: redshirt freshmen Justin Jann, Dillon Middlemiss and Frank Umu; sophomores Xavier Cochrane, Troy Lewis and Kyle Trego; and junior Danny Galloway.
