Women Golfers Open 2016-17 Season Monday

September 11, 2016 | Women's Golf

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of Colorado women's golf team opens its first tournament of the 2016-17 season on Monday, Sept. 12 here in the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational hosted by New Mexico.

The two-day 56-hole event is set to be played at the Lobo's New Mexico Championship Golf Course and features an impressive 16-team field. Nine of the 16 squads are ranked in Golfweek's top 25, including three in the top 10. The Buffaloes, ranked No. 22 overall will also face five Pac-12 schools. The following teams are slated to compete:  Arizona (10), Arizona State (11), Baylor (54), Denver (75), Iowa State (25), Northwestern (8), New Mexico (53), Oklahoma State (9), Oklahoma (59), Pepperdine (48), San Diego State (21), California (16), UC Davis (81), UNLV (19), Washington State (71).

Colorado head coach Anne Kelly enters her 20th season guiding the Buffaloes as the team looks to build on its second-straight fifth place finish in the Pac-12 Championships and third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Regional last year, where the Buffs fell only one stroke short of advancing to the NCAA Championships . CU returns five golfers from its 2015-16 squad, while welcoming two freshmen standouts from Australia in Robyn Choi and Kirsty Hodgkins. Colorado lost five golfers from last season, including Alexis Keating, who graduated this past May. She was second on the team with a 74.14 stroke average.

Senior Esther Lee is back for her final year in black and gold. Lee has led the Buffs the last two seasons in stroke average, top 20 finishes, rounds in the 60s, subpar rounds and even-par rounds. In addition, every round she has played while at CU has counted toward team scoring. Junior Brittany Fan, redshirt junior Tori Glenn and sophomores Lauryn Keating and Gillian Vance also return for the Buffaloes' 2016-17 campaign.

Everyone, but Choi will be playing in this week's tournament. Choi is in Mexico representing Australia in the World Amateur Team Championships, Sept. 14-17. Lee, Fan, Hodgkins, Glenn and Vance will play in the standard five-scoring-four team format and Keating will be playing as an individual.

The Buffs' first of two rounds on Monday begins with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. MDT and they are paired with golfers from Arizona State and UNLV. Live scoring is available at BirdieFire.com.
