Four Buffs In Fort Collins, One Headed To Mexico

BOULDER — The University of Colorado men's golf team has five of its members playing individually this week, four in Fort Collins beginning Monday at the Colorado State Ram Masters Invitational, and the fifth in Riviera Maya, Mexico, at the World Amateur Team Championships.

Freshman Victor Bjorlow is tied for 21st individually in the CSU meet, turning in a 3-over 143 scorecard on the 7,218-yard, par-70 Fort Collins Country Club course; that was just one of 10 subpar rounds in the afternoon in the 100-man field.  Bjorlow had an eagle, a birdie and a single bogey to go with 15 pars en route to a second round 68.

Senior Ryan Schmitz turned in a second round 72 after opening with a 76 to stand tied for 52nd (148); freshman Jack Li (151, t-64th) and junior Kade Crossland (152, tie-71st) rounded out the Buff contingent.

Air Force's Sunwoo Choi is the individual leader through two rounds at 5-under 13 (65-70), while Wichita State and Air Force are tied for the team lead at 3-over 563.  The event concludes Tuesday.

Senior Jeremy Paul is on the Germany team in the WATC, the first of four rounds begin Wednesday on the Iberostar Playa Paraiso and Mayakoba El Camaleon golf course, both just outside of Cancun.

Paul, who has set numerous school records in his first three years for the Buffaloes, is currently the 111th ranked amateur in the world. Among his many marks was a 70.67 stroke average last season, which shattered the previous record by nearly a full stroke.

Players from 71 countries, including the defending champion United States, are competing in the 72-hole tournament which runs through Saturday.  Teams are comprised of either two or three players, with the low two scores counting toward the daily team total.  Several of the nation's top collegians participate in representing their native country; Paul is believed to be the first CU player to do so in the 29-year history of the event, in which competition takes place every other year.

"It obviously means a lot to me representing my country in a world championship," Paul said.  "This is my first time playing in this event and I am really looking forward to it.  There are some of the best amateurs in the world competing against each other and it is going to be a great test. Not only are the two courses great golf courses but also require some precise shots, especially from the tee boxes.

"I believe we (Germany) have a good team and can certainly play for some medal, if we get our games on the course."
