Buffs In Striking Distance After Two Rounds In San Jose
September 19, 2016 | Women's Golf
SAN JOSE, Calif. – University of Colorado's Gillian Vance and Kirsty Hodgkins put in top 10 performances as the Buffaloes sit in a tie for second after two rounds of the 2016 Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational at the Almaden Golf & Country Club.
WHAT HAPPENED: Despite missing All-American Esther Lee for this event due to an illness that's spread throughout the team, Colorado finds itself just two strokes off the lead with one round to go after shooting a 16-over 592 over the first 36 holes. The Buffaloes shot a 7-over 295 in the first round, and led for a good portion of the round, playing the first nine holes at 2-over. But the 90-plus degree day combined with a lingering virus that has put Colorado at less than 100 percent for the last week, gave Brigham Young a chance to take over the lead which the Cougars held for the remainder of the day.
TOURNAMENT FIELD: Brigham Young holds the two-round lead with a 14-over par 590. The Cougars saw their advantage grow to double-digits early in the second round, before coming back to the pack. Host San Jose State had the day's best overall round with a 293 in the second to tie Colorado at 592 after 36 holes. The Buffaloes and San Jose State hold a 10-stroke cushion over Santa Clara and UC Irvine, tied for fourth at 602.
KIRSTY HODGKINS (74-71—145, +1): Hodgkins shot a 1-over 143 to end the day in fifth place, just four strokes off the lead. She put in Colorado's lone sub-par round of the day with a 1-under 71 in the second round. Hodgkins played at 4-under over her final nine holes, including three straight birdies on No. 14, 15 and 16; a par 3 sandwiched in between a pair of par 4's. Hodgkins was tied for 14th after the first round shooting a 2-over par 74. She started strong, playing her first nine at 2-under, logging birdies at the par-3, 136-yard No. 6 and the par-4, 377-yard No. 9 hole. She struggled with holes 16-18, recording two bogeys and a double on the par-5 18th, but rebounded with a birdie on her final hole of the round, the 489-yard par 4 No. 1.
GILLIAN VANCE (73-74—147, +3): Vance finished her 36-hole day in a three-way tie for eighth place after shooting a 3-over par 147. She jumped up two spots over the course of her second round which featured three birdies and 10 pars. The 147 is her best 36-hole score since shooting 146 over the first two rounds of last fall's Ron Moore Intercollegiate. Vance was tied for 10th after the first round scoring a 1-over 73. She had birdies on two of her first five holes and sat in the top five for a good portion of the first round, but had four bogeys in a six-hole stretch to close it out.
Â
ROBYN CHOI (72-77--149, +5): Choi made her Colorado debut by shooting a 5-over par 149, tied with Sophie Bergland of Cal Poly for 12th place, two strokes out of the top 10. Choi, coming off a week where she played for her native Australia at the World Amateur Team Championships in Mexico, ran out of gas early in the second round, playing 5-over during her first nine holes. She found a second wind, however, recording two birdies and five pars over her final nine. She led Colorado and was tied for sixth overall after the first round shooting an even par 72. Choi registered four birdies and played the last nine holes at 1-under. She took advantage of the par 3's, scoring a tournament-leading 2-under on those eight holes.
TORI GLENN (76-79—155, +11): Glenn played a steady first round, shooting 38 on both the front and back to tie for 24th after the first 18. She had a chance to stay among the top 20 individuals for the day, but recorded double bogeys on the par-4 No. 16 and par-5 No. 18 to end the day. Her 155 total matched her 36-hole output from last week's Dick McGuire Invitational, one stroke off her personal best 154 set at the 2014 Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic.
BRITTANY FAN (80-75--155, +11). Fan regrouped after a slow round one where she logged only the third round 80 or above in her last 45 starts. She shot a 3-over 75 in the second round, putting her in a tie for 34th, and climbing 19 spots on the leaderboard in the process. She struggled on the back nine of the first round shooting a 6-over 42. Fan played her final 15 holes at 1-over, including six straight pars to close out the day.
TOP INDIVIDUALS: San Jose State's My Leander and BYU's Kendra Dalton are tied for the lead at 3-under, two strokes up on Colorado State's Ellen Secor and Gonzaga's Ciera Min, both at 1-under.
NOTEWORTHY: Choi's first round 72 tied for the seventh-best low score for a first round as a Buff, a spot she shares with current teammates Esther Lee and Hodgkins, who made her debut at last week's Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational. Choi missed that tournament while competing for Australia at the World Amateur Team Championships where she tied for 35th with a 9-over 297. Australia tied for 12th out of 55 teams. Colorado was the only team in the tournament to play in the red numbers on par 3's. The Buffaloes were 1-under on the day with an average score of 2.98. Hodgkins and Vance tied for second on par 3's at -1, one shot behind Choi. Colorado and Colorado State each had 26 birdies on the day, second only to BYU's 28. Hodgkins' eight birdies tied for third behind BYU's Dalton (12) and Colorado State's Katrina Prendergast (9).
QUOTABLE: Head coach Anne Kelly: "Esther was too ill to play. She would have given it everything she had, but she just didn't have anything today. Kirsty is also fighting the virus, but I was so impressed with her toughness today; her finish was unbelievable…that was really the standout to me today. She was playing two or three over after eight holes and she really got on a birdie string. She was not feeling well, but gutted it out."
Â
"Everybody contributed, they've all been fighting this virus and different things, but they all played with a lot of heart and toughness. So hopefully we'll all get a little rest tonight and get ready to go tomorrow"
Â
"Gillian was a bright spot. She played well. She had the illness last week – was in the ER about a week ago – but bounced back and played really well today."
Â
"We struggled with the par 5s and you just can't do that. We've got to do better tomorrow. And it wasn't the drives, it was when we got around the greens, but we can clean that up."
Â
"I was really proud of Tori jumping in to Esther's spot and played some really good shots. She had a little trouble in her second round, but she's working hard and her game has come a long way."
NEXT UP: The Buffaloes play the final round of the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational on Tuesday. Colorado will pair with BYU and San Jose State, with a scheduled shotgun start of 10 a.m. MT.
