ALBUQUERUE, N.M. — The University of Colorado men's golf team battled the elements here Friday and finds themselves in the middle of the pack through two rounds of the 63rd Annual New Mexico William H. Tucker Invitational.

San Diego State owns the team lead with a 3-under par 576 score, the only one of 15 competing here that is under par through 36 holes.  Colorado State is in second, eight back at 581, with host New Mexico (583), Brigham Young (584) and Texas-El Paso (586) rounding out the top five.  The Buffaloes are in ninth place with a 593 total.

Colorado was in seventh after the morning round, with a respectable 3-over 291 on the long, 7,555-yard, par-72 UNM Championship Course layout.  Conditions worsened throughout the day with high winds wreaking havoc for about 90 minutes in the afternoon, inflating the average score in the 92-man field from 74.8 for the first round to 76.2 for the second.

The Buffs are being paced by true freshman Morton Toft Hansen, who fired a pair of 73s for a 2 over-146 score, which has him tied for 14th place.  He reached 73 in the same fashion for both 18s, scoring three birdies, 11 pars and four bogeys in each round.

Junior Spencer Painton is tied for 20th after posting a 71-76—147 scorecard, as he was the only CU player to record a subpar round on the day.  He was fairly consistent throughout the day, with four birdies, 26 pars, five bogeys and a double; the latter came during the wind explosion, but otherwise he scored pars on every other hole until things died down.

Senior Ethan Freeman is tied for 49th after he fashioned a 74-77—151 effort (7-over par); he also had 26 pars, but managed just three birdies on the day after entering play here with over 25 percent of his holes scored in the red (subpar) this season.  The 26 pars by both Freeman and Painton lead the field, as do the Buffaloes overall with 113.

Junior Yannik Paul, CU's stroke average leader coming in at 69.4, had an uncharacteristic substandard day for him.  He is tied for 54th with a 73-79—152 score, managing six birdies but only 19 pars; he had nine bogeys, a double and a triple, the latter two in the afternoon.  That was just his 11th round in 71 in his career that didn't count toward CU's team score.

Junior John Souza had a rough start with an 80 in the morning but settled down for a 76 the second time around the UNM track, with his 156 (12-over) having him tied for 75th.  He was done in by seven bogeys and a triple in the first round, but came back with 12 pars with a birdies against five bogeys in the afternoon.

"We had an okay day going as a team and then we struggled through the middle part of the second round," CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  "The wind switched from 10-15 miles per hour out of the southeast to gusts up to 30 out of the northwest.  We just didn't play the into the wind holes very well as a group.  However, I was proud of the finish of that round as a good round tomorrow will put us in position for a decent finish and wins against some quality teams."

"I thought Spencer and Morten did a really nice job overall today, considering it was their first time at the Tucker," Edwards added.  "Morten's short game was spectacular and Spencer really managed his game well."

There is a three-way tie for first in the individual race, with the trio all tied at 4-under 140: Rhett Rasmussen (BYU), P.J. Samiere (San Diego State) and Blake Cannon (Colorado State, the only player in the afternoon to shoot a round in the 60s with a 69).  Only seven players broke par in the second round while three others matched it while battling the winds.

The final round is set for Saturday with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start; CU will be paired with Pac-12 conference mates Arizona and Washington State along with Pepperdine.  The Buffaloes will then turn right around and return home where they will host the 7th Annual Mark Simpson-CU Invitational Monday and Tuesday at Colorado National Golf Club in Erie.

JEREMY PAUL AT THE WATC: University of Colorado junior Jeremy Paul shot a 74 here Friday in Cancun, Mexico, in the third round of the World Amateur Team Championships, which now has three rounds in the books.

One of three players representing Germany , his two teammates bested his effort and thus Paul's score didn't count for the first time in three days, but Germany did move up from 23rd into 19th place heading into Saturday's fourth and final round.

Australia is running away with the event, owning a 398 team score (or 32-under par), with Ireland a distant second (414) and the United States in third (415). Germany is tied for 19th with Japan with 424 team scores (6-under) in the event that features 71 competing countries; but it's a logjam just ahead and it is just five strokes back of the top 10.

Paul is now tied for 47th individually with a 72-69-74—215 scorecard through 54 holes, which is even par.  The event is utilizing two courses, and he played the 6,768-yard, par-72 Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club for the second time on Friday.  He had three birdies, 12 pars, a bogey and two doubles for his round.

He will close out competition here playing the 6,988-yard, par-71 Mayakoba El Camaleon Golf Club course on Saturday, where he shot his 69on Thursday.  Each country has either two or three players competing, but only the two lowest scores count toward the team total.  Armenia's Karen Hovhannisyan is still last in the field of 211, but turned in his best round – a 111 – for 358 total (144-over par).
