Buffs Finish Strong In Posting Best Final Round Team Score
ALBUQUERUE, N.M. — The University of Colorado men's golf team bounced back from a poor second round performance to shoot the best team score in the final round to move up into a fifth place finish here Saturday in the 62nd Annual New Mexico William H. Tucker Invitational.
San Diego State led from start to finish in winning the event with an 863 team score, as the Aztecs were the only school under par at 1-under. Colorado State grabbed second with an 873 total, followed by Brigham Young (878), Washington (879) and then the Buffaloes and host New Mexico at 882 (18-over).
The Buffs had shot a 302 in the second round, but bounced back with a 1-over par 289 Saturday morning, the best team score in the final round and the sixth-best single round tally in the tournament.
The Buffs were led by true freshman Morton Toft Hansen, who closed the day about has hot as one could – firing a 31 on his final nine holes (the front) en route to a 3-under 69. That gave him a 54-hole total of 215, or 1-under par, as he was one of just seven players to best par for the tournament on the 7,555-yard, par-72 UNM Championship Course layout. It was also just one of three rounds in the 60s Saturday, as well as his best collegiate round to date in relation to par.
It was the highest individual finish by a Buff in this tournament in eight years, dating back to the 2008 event when Derek Tolan tied for medalist honors. And in the 62 years CU has participated in the Tucker, it is the highest finish ever by a Buff freshman.
Hansen started on the 8th hole and eventually made the turn from 18 to 1 at 2-over par; he then eagled the 544-yard No. 1 hole and then scored three straight birdies on Nos. 4, 5 and 6. He played the par-4 holes here even overall and never scored worse than a bogey, a remarkable achievement for someone who had never played this course before. He had the eagle, nine birdies, 34 pars and 10 bogeys for the tournament.
Junior Spencer Painton tied for 19th after closing with a 2-over 74 for a 221 total (5-over par), as he wrapped things up with a birdie, 14 pars and three bogeys – his 40 pars for the tournament led the 92-man field.
Junior Yannik Paul, who entered the meet as CU's stroke average leader (69.4), shook off some first day troubles and closed with an even-par 72 for a 224 overall, tying him for 31st. He had a steady day with two birdies, 14 pars and two bogeys.
Senior Ethan Freeman tied for 34th after firing a final round 74 for a 9-over par 225 total. He had three birdies, 10 pars and five bogeys to finish up here.
Junior John Souza had his struggles here, shooting an 8-over 80 for a 20-over 236 total that tied him for 79th. It was aa bit of an adventurous last round for him, as he had a team-high five birdies on the day, but with six pars, two bogeys, four doubles and a triple.
"Spectacular round by Morten; 69 out here with these hole locations is a really strong round," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "It was a very impressive performance by both him and Spencer. Yannik's 72 was a nice round as well and Ethan exorcised some demons shooting 74. We are very pleased shooting the low final round and moving up the board to fifth in a tough field. It will give us some momentum heading into the Simpson (CU's home meet which starts Monday). John was off his game this week but he is a very good player who will bounce back."
Colorado State's Blake Cannon garnered medalist honors with a 6-under 210 total after closing a 70; he won by two strokes over San Diego State's P.J. Samiere.
The Buffaloes will turn right around and return home where they will host the 7th Annual Mark Simpson-CU Invitational Monday and Tuesday at Colorado National Golf Club in Erie. Seventeen schools are set to participate in the 54-hole event.
JEREMY PAUL AT THE WATC: University of Colorado junior Jeremy Paul finished with a 2-over par 73 in the final round of the World Amateur Team Championships, which concluded Saturday in Cancun, Mexico.
