Kornieck Nets Another Winner As CU Wins Sixth Straight Match
September 29, 2016 | Soccer
TUCSON, Ariz. - Taylor Kornieck blasted a free kick into the net in the 56th minute as Colorado beat Arizona 1-0 in Tucson, Ariz., on Thursday night. The match, which was delayed 30 minutes due to lightning, was the sixth consecutive win for the Buffaloes.
Â
CU improved to 8-3-0 on the season and 2-0-0 in the Pac-12, eclipsing last season's win total of seven. It is the first time since the Buffs joined the Pac-12 in 2011 that they have started conference play with two wins.
Â
Kornieck's shot came from 22 yards out and bounced off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net, out of reach of the Arizona goalkeeper. It was her team-leading seventh goal of the season and her fourth game-winning goal of the year.
Â
WHAT HAPPENED: The two teams played a relatively uneventful first half. Jalen Tompkins stopped all three Arizona shots that went on goal, though none were particularly dangerous. The Buffs had three shots on goal as well, though the best scoring chance did not result in a shot when in the 10th minute, Emily Bruder centered a pass from the right end line, but Megan Massey was just a step too late to connect in front of the net.
Â
Arizona came out in the second half and hit the crossbar on a shot from the top of the box in the 47th minute, but it that was it for Wildcats scoring chances until late.
Â
Bruder was taken down from behind in the 56th minute as she was pulling ahead of Arizona's defense for a breakaway near the top of the box and after a yellow card was assessed, the Buffs were awarded a free kick. Kornieck then connected on the shot in for a 1-0 lead.
Â
It was all CU after the goal as the Buffs took control of possession much of the remainder of the match.
Â
In the 77th minute, the Buffs nearly pushed the lead to 2-0. Stephanie Zuniga hit the crossbar with a shot from the six-yard box. She then headed the rebound into the net, but fouled the goalkeeper in the process and the goal was waved off.
Â
The Wildcats found energy again in the final 10 minutes with three shots and a corner kick. Joss Orejel blocked a shot in front of the net to keep the Buffs in front in the 88th minute in one of the key plays of the night.
Â
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Tompkins continued her shutout streak, stretching it to 349:39. The defense of Kahlia Hogg, Kelsey Aaknes, Alex Vidger, Erin Greening and Orejel again kept UA's scoring chances to a minimum and the majority of shot attempts from distance.
Â
UP NEXT: CU will play at Arizona State at 4 p.m. MT on Sunday. That match will be televised on Pac-12 Mountain Network.
Â
NOTES: It was the second match this season delayed from the start by lightning (Air Force was delayed 90 minutes) … Kornieck is climbing up the record books as her seven goals are already fourth-most ever by a CU freshman and her four game-winning goals are fourth-most ever in a season by any player and third-most by a freshman … CU's 2-0 start in Pac-12 play is the best start since joining the league in 2011 … it was the third consecutive 1-0 win for the Buffs, the first time in school history CU has won three consecutive matches by a 1-0 score.

On how the team played
"I thought we played well. Arizona is a tough team to play. They put you under a lot of pressure and I felt that we did a good job of keeping the ball when we won it and really limiting their dangerous stuff in the final third. It got a little helter skelter in the final 10 minutes, but you're going to expect that because obviously they were pushing for the goal. But before that, I thought we did a really good job of keeping the ball and creating chances and Taylor put us ahead.
Â
On the decision to have Kornieck take the free kick
"A lot of times in those situations you just go with your gut feeling and it was a little bit further out than Kahlia normally hits them so we figured let's have Taylor have a go and obviously she hit it really well. And after that I thought we defended very well. Our five players that played in the back today, four starters plus Alex Vidger, I thought were fantastic. And once again JJ (Tompkins) did a good job of organizing the team and dealing with all of their dangerous stuff.
Â
On the momentum change after the goal
"I thought after we scored, we kept playing and kept the ball. And we knew that in the last 10 minutes or so, they were going to start throwing everything at us. I that we absorbed that pressure well and I thought we dealt with the corners and the long throw-ins late in the game.
