Buffs Settle For Scoreless Draw At Washington To Pick Up Road Point

October 01, 2017 | Soccer

BOULDER - Colorado settled for a scoreless draw at Washington on Sunday afternoon. The Buffs are now 7-2-3 overall and 1-1-1 in the Pac-12, while the Huskies are 8-3-1 and 1-1-1. By earning a point with the draw, it was a four-point weekend on the road after a 2-0 win at Washington State on Thursday.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The first half was relatively quiet with only one shot on target for each team.

Marty Puketapu nearly put CU ahead in the 52nd minute when her point-blank shot from the left side of the six-yard box was sent right at the UW goalkeeper.

Jalen Tompkins came up with a diving save on a header off a corner kick in the 74th minute to keep the match scoreless at that point. She made one more save in the 90th minute and another in overtime.

KEY STATISTICS: Tompkins finished with four saves for her fifth solo shutout of the season and CU's ninth clean sheet. Washington outshot the Buffs 16-9, but shots on goal were an even 4-4.

NOTES: This was the third scoreless draw CU has played this season (also vs. Colorado State and CSUN), tying the school record set in 2007 for most in one season ... CU was playing without Sarah Kinzner, who suffered an injury late in Thursday's match at Washington State (a 2-0 win in Pullman) ... she was a game-time decision on Sunday ... Alex Vidger returned to the lineup after sitting out Thursday's match for receiving two yellow cards against UCLA a week ago.

UP NEXT: The Buffs will host No. 11 California on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

POSTGAME QUOTES:
Danny Sanchez, head coach
On the game
"I felt it was kind of a typical Sunday game on a doubleheader weekend. I was happy with how we competed and really happy with how we defended. You could tell our legs were a little heavy going forward and not having Sarah Kinzner in the midfield kind of stretched us a little bit. But I was really pleased with how our players stepped up and players had to play maybe some more minutes than they normally would in a Sunday game, but they never looked tired, they looked fit and they competed to the end. Even towards the end of the second overtime, I thought we were still pressing for the game-winner."

On finishing with a draw against Washington
"I think it's a fair result and I think it's a good result on the road against a really good Pac-12 team that was coming off a nice win on Thursday. Big picture, on the road, you'll take whatever you can get, so to get four points on the weekend is good momentum as we head home next weekend."

On getting four points on the road trip
"Every game in the Pac-12 is brutal, especially on the road. If I'm going to take a step back from it, like I told the team, we're going to be pleased that we were able to get something out of this game after a tough match on Thursday and we're looking forward to getting back to Prentup to battle Cal next Thursday.

On the play of the defense on Sunday
"They did very well, were organized and it was good to have Alex [Vidger] back. She did a good job as a holding mid and dealing with some of their dangerous players. The starting back four, along with Courtney [Fedor] when she got it, were rock solid. They didn't give up many clear chances and when we did, JJ [Tompkins] cleaned them up. It was good with that piece of it, maybe could have done a little bit more going forward, but we definitely defended well and all 11 players defended. Everyone was working both sides of the ball. Taylor [Kornieck] was box-to-box all over the place doing a ton of work. Cassie [Phillips], Megan [Massey], it was really a team effort."

On playing without Kinzner
"We lose Sarah, but we pick up Vidger and we've got players that can compete at this level. It hurt our depth a little bit, but fortunately for us, Alex did not have to play on Thursday so she was fresh and was able to give us some good minutes and chase some things down for us. We're looking forward to getting as healthy as we can for next Thursday."
