Buffs Finish Second At Edean Ihlanfeldt Invite

SAMMAMISH, WASH. —The University of Colorado women's golf team played the best final round of the field in the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational here Wednesday but couldn't catch Washington as CU earned a second-place finish. The tournament, hosted by Washington was played at the par 72, 5,980-yard Sahalee Country Club.
Over the final 18 holes, Colorado shot a field low 288, en-route to a 290-295-289—874 or 10-over par final scorecard. The Buffs had 10-strokes to catch the University of Washington and came close only finishing second by two-strokes. Washington took the title at 7-over par, 871 while the Buffs came in second at 9-over par. BYU dropped one spot falling to third at 18-over 882. San Francisco placed fourth at 51-over par 915, while UC Davis moved up three spots to take fifth at 54-over par 918.
"The team made a valiant comeback," said Colorado head coach Anne Kelly. "We tried to pull out the win, but didn't quite get it. They played well and I think everybody was of course a little disappointed but they have an idea of what they want to work on."
Robyn Choi earned her third straight top-five finish, tying for third place overall with a final scorecard of 71-71-74—216 or even par. Choi's final round was a little up and down as the sophomore started on hole No. 1 then went on to collect five pars, two birdies, a bogey and a double to finish at 1-over. On the back nine Choi birdied holes No. 10 and 14 but where off set by two bogeys on holes No. 15 and 16. Overall she collected 35 pars and nine birdies.
Sophomore Kirsty Hodgkins recorded a field low 69 on the day to surge five spots and finish tied for second overall with a final scorecard of 71-75-69—215 or 1-under par. Hodgkins started on hole No. 1 and bogeyed her second hole, but settled down and didn't struggle again adding four birdies and 12 more pars. This marks her third consecutive tournament finishing in the top-10 and second straight finishing in the top-five.
"Kirsty played very well today, ending up second. She played very strong today."
Senior Brittany Fan also improved from her second-round score carding an even par 72 for the last round to move up and place sixth overall at 2-over par 218. This marks Fan's first top-10 finish this fall season. She also led the field in par-three scoring with an average of 2.75. Fan started off solid on the front nine finishing at even par and although her back nine were up and down with three birdies and three bogeys, she stayed strong to finish at even par 72.
Freshman Alisha Lau is settling in nicely as she carded her best round of the tournament on Wednesday carding a 2-over par 74 to give her a final scorecard of 76-78-74—228. Lau finished tied for 21st place at 12-over par. Lau was very consistent in her final round collecting 16 pars and two bogeys. She collected a total of 34 pars and five birdies.
Gillian Vance posted a 6-over par 78 in the final round. The front side, where she started the day was a little more of a struggle as she collected four bogeys in a row to go 4-over in her front nine. On the back nine she dropped a birdie on hole 11, but she also added three birdies. Vance placed 33rd with a final scorecard of 80-75-78—233.
Kendra Dalton from BYU earned medalist honors carding a 4-under par 212. Kirsty Hodgkins placed second place at 1-under par 215, teammate Robyn Choi tied for third at even par 216 with Karen Miyamoto from Washington. Julianne Alvarez from Washington rounded out the top five at 1-over par 217.
The Buffs will head to Kona, Hawaii for the Pac-12 preview on October 23-24.
