Tompkins Records 11 Saves In Scoreless Draw Against Arizona

October 22, 2017 | Soccer

BOULDER – Colorado tied Arizona 0-0 on Sunday afternoon at Prentup Field in its final home match of the 2017 regular season. The Buffs are now 8-5-4 overall and 2-4-2 in the Pac-12, while the Wildcats are 7-4-4 and 4-2-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The first half was very active on both ends of the field, but neither team could find the goal.

Jalen Tompkins came up with two huge saves early in the second half to keep the match scoreless, stopping a breakaway in the 54th minute and a saving a free kick from the top of the 18 in the 56th minute.

The Buffs had several chances off the foot of Kornieck in the closing minutes of regulation, including a free kick from the top of the box that was blocked in the 90th minute.

Both teams had chances in overtime. Tompkins made a diving save off an open shot from the center of the box in the first overtime and then in the second overtime, Kornieck nearly ended the match when she hit the crossbar on a chance from inside the box.

KEY STATISTICS: Tompkins made 11 saves, reaching a season high in that category. The Buffs were outshot 29-16, but were fairly even in quality scoring chances. Taylor Kornieck broke CU's school record with 12 shot attempts in the match, topping the previous mark of 10 set three times by Nikki Marshall.

NOTES: Tompkins's 11 saves were one shy of a career high ... it was the fourth scoreless draw for CU this season, breaking the previous record of three in a season (set in 2007) ... Kornieck broke CU's school record with 12 shot attempts in the match, topping the previous mark of 10 set three times by Nikki Marshall ... after a 3-0 win over Arizona State on Thursday, it is the second time this season the Buffs have had back-to-back shutouts in Pac-12 play.

UP NEXT: The Buffs play at Oregon State on Thursday at 4 p.m. MT.

POSTGAME QUOTES:
Danny Sanchez, head coach
On coming out with a tie after all of the opportunities they had
"It was probably a fair result. Obviously, it was important for us to get something out of this game. A win would have been huge, but a loss would have been bad. After looking at the quality chances from both teams, it was probably a fair result. I did like how we started the game. I thought that if we would have gotten something early it would have been a different game, but it is tough to score in this league, and this team (Arizona) has gotten some really good results, and that is why their RPI is about 20. We will take the positives from this, and see what happens when we go on the road to Oregon where we have to get results."

On the play of Jalen Tompkins
"The game was starting to get really stretched, and both teams were getting tired. There were chances going both ways, and that is when you need good goalkeeping, and her save in the first overtime gave us a chance. Sometimes you lay it all on the line, and in a game like this you are a little sad, but you have to take the positives. We played a very good team and got a result, and now we have to go on the road."

On Taylor Kornieck's late shot off of the crossbar
"She laid it all on the line. There was nothing left in the tank there. She was all over the place, played 110 minutes, and was the best player on the field. It was just a little unlucky. Sometimes it isn't your day, but then you look at some of their chance too, and they rang the bar a couple of times."

On back and forth game
"I really liked how we started the game. I was disappointed with how we started the second half, for whatever reason Arizona came out and took it to us. We made a couple of subs and I think it kind of stemmed the tide. The good thing about this (game) for the fans is, even if it was a scoreless draw, there was plenty of action. There have been 3-0, 4-0 games where there wasn't as much action. There wasn't as much action on Thursday as there was today, and that was a 3-0 win for us. I thought both teams were going for it, they weren't sitting in, both teams were creating opportunities, it just wasn't meant to be for either one."

On road trip to Oregon next weekend
"It's a tough trip. Travel wise and then playing on different surfaces, but at the end of the day every game in the Pac-12 is tough. I think after this maybe we get away, we re-gather ourselves tomorrow at training, Tuesday we'll get after it, then Wednesday we're on the road and we're back at it Thursday. We have to recover with our sports medicine people, Kari (Kebach) becomes vital this time of the year to bounce back and get ready to go for Thursday.
