No. 25 Buffs Suffer Narrow Loss To No. 9 Washington

SEATTLE — The No. 25 Colorado Buffaloes suffered their second consecutive loss on Sunday, dropping a close 3-0 match to No. 9 Washington on the road. Set scores were 24-26, 22-25, 14-25.
With the loss, CU is now 12-5 overall, 2-4 in Pac-12 play. The Huskies snapped a two-match losing streak to improve to 14-3, 3-3 in league action.
WHAT HAPPENED: Junior Frankie Shebby led both teams with 13 kills. She also added 13 digs and a block. Alexa Smith and Joslyn Hayes each recorded eight kills in the effort. Smith came close to a double-double, recording 11 digs while handing out three assists, and Hayes added a pair of blocks. Brynna DeLuzio handed out 30 of CU's 35 assists and came up with five digs, one block and one kill.
UW had a pair of hitters with 11 kills: Tia Scambray and Crissy Jones. Jones hit .400 and posted five blocks, while Scambray added 10 digs and three blocks.
SET 1: Colorado led 15-14 at the media timeout after a 3-0 run. The Buffs added to their run with a kill from DeLuzio, but then UW tallied a kill to end it. The two sides battled and after CU went up 19-18, UW decided it was time to take a timeout. The Huskies were forced to take another timeout after two consecutive points for the Buffs (21-18). This time, UW came out of the break with two straight points (21-20), forcing the Buffs to use a timeout. Shebby recorded a kill on the following point, but UW answered with three straight points to take a 23-22 advantage. The two sides fought to the finish, but it was the Huskies who took the 26-24 win.
SET 2: UW took a 12-8 lead to start the second set, causing CU to use a timeout. The Huskies extended their lead to 14-8 before the Buffs used a 3-0 run to cut it back to three (14-11). CU cut it down to just two at 16-14, but the Huskies rallied and went back up 20-15. The Buffs used a 5-2 run to get back within two again (22-20), forcing UW to use a timeout. The Huskies took the following point, which made CU take a quick timeout (23-20). A kill from Hayes and an ace from Stephanie Shadley brought the score to 23-22, but UW answered and closed out the set with a pair of kills (25-22).
SET 3: The Huskies jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the third set, but the Buffs recorded a 4-0 run to bring the score within a point (8-7). UW responded with a 6-1 run to bring the score to 14-8, causing CU to take a timeout. The Buffs kept fighting, but the UW lead was too much and the Buffs eventually fell 25-14.
NOTES: Frankie Shebby recorded her sixth double-double of the season…UW leads the all-time series 11-4…This is just the second time this season the Buffs have lost a match in three sets...CU is 5-2 overall in three-set matches.
TEAM STATISTICS: Washington hit .283 with 48 kills and 12 errors on 127 attacks, while Colorado hit .121 with 39 kills and 23 errors on 132 swings. UW also led in digs (62-58) and blocks (15.0-4.0). Both teams served up three aces.
NEXT UP: The Buffs continue their road trip in Arizona. First up they will take on Arizona State on Friday, Oct. 13, at 8 p.m. MT in Tempe, Ariz. Then on Sunday, Oct. 15, CU will be in Tucson, Ariz. to square off against the Arizona Wildcats at 2 p.m. MT.
