November 20, 2017 | Soccer
CHICAGO – Colorado soccer players Hannah Cardenas and Taylor Kornieck have both been invited to the U-20 United States Women's National Team training camp in Sunrise, Fla. Camp will conclude on Nov. 23.
Kornieck, a sophomore from Henderson, Nev., has been a member of youth national teams for the U.S. since the U-15 level and competed in six matches this past summer between the U-19 and U-20 national teams. She scored her first international goal and added an assist against England with the U-20s in July, and also recorded an assist with the U-19s vs. the Czech Republic full national team.
This fall, Kornieck was named second-team All-Pac-12 and started all 22 matches as a midfielder for the Buffs. She scored seven goals and had four assists, tying with Marty Puketapu for the team lead with 18 points. She also attempted a team-high 92 shots, finishing one off the school record of 93.
Cardenas, a freshman from Placentia, Calif., is attending her first national team camp. With the Buffs this past fall, she started all 22 matches as a centerback and played 1948 minutes, second on the team. She helped CU break the school records for goals-against average (0.61) and clean sheets (14) in a season.
The United States is in the process of assembling its team for the 2018 CONCACAF Women's U-20 Championship, which will be played in Trinidad & Tobago. Playing in Group B, the U.S. will open the tournament against Nicaragua on Jan. 19 and will also play a to-be-determined Caribbean nation and Mexico in the group stage.
The top three finishers at the CONCACAF U-20 Championship will qualify for the 2018 FIFA U-20 World Cup in France.
Cardenas and Kornieck are two of three players currently with national teams, joining Puketapu, who is on the New Zealand full national team. CU has 11 players on its current roster that have either competed in international competition or been invited to youth or full national team camps.
