King, Leonard Earn UCHealth CU Athlete of the Week Honors
November 29, 2017 | Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball
George King (men's basketball) and Kennedy Leonard (women's basketball) have been named the UCHealth CU Athletes of the Week for their outstanding performances last weekend.
Senior guard George King led the undefeated CU men's team to a win over in-state foe Air Force on Sunday. He recorded his eighth career double-double, scoring 25 points and grabbing a career-high 15 rebounds in the win. King's 25 points came on an efficient 9-of-13 from the field, including 5-of-6 from three-point range. A career-high five 3-pointers boosted King's 3-point percentage to 45.5%, after he converted just 20% over the first four games. It was the second consecutive game that King scored 25 points, and the first time he's had back to back 20-point games since his breakout 2015-16 season. After back to back 25 point performances, King is now just 24 points shy of the 1,000th point milestone.
On the women's side, junior guard Kennedy Leonard was named MVP of the Rocky Mountain Hoops Classic after helping CU to the tournament championship. In two wins, she averaged 19.5 points, 7.5 assists and 2.5 steals, while compiling a 15/3 assist/turnover ratio. In Friday's opening round win over Mississippi Valley State, Leonard had 13 points and seven assists in just 19 minutes of action. Then in Saturday's championship game, Leonard starred again, scoring a season-high 26 points, on an efficient 50% from the field and dishing out eight assists. She notched her 1,000th career point in the first quarter, before exploding for 17 second half points to carry the Buffs to a 76-61 victory over George Mason.
Also nominated for this week's honors: Alex Kinney (football) and Alexa Smith (volleyball)
Junior punter Alex Kinney had a career day in Saturday's loss to Utah. Kinney punted five times for an average of 50.0 yards. His longest punt of the night came early in the second half, when a booming 60-yarder pinned Utah at their own 7-yard line. Kinney had three punts inside the 20 in Saturday's season finale to bring his 2017 total to a school-record 28 punts inside the 20.
The Colorado Volleyball team is back in the NCAA Tournament, thanks in part to junior Alexa Smith's performance over the final week of the season. Smith led the Buffs to a 1-1 record last week, averaging 4.86 kills per set and hitting .342. She also added 2.00 digs per set and 0.29 blocks per set. In the sweep of Cal, Smith recorded 14 kills and hit .429 with two errors on 28 attacks. Smith also recorded 20 kills, 10 digs, and hit .294 in Friday's loss to Utah.
