CU duo raced internationally in France over the weekend

BOULDER — University of Colorado skiers Petra Hyncicova and David Ketterer were racing in international competitions over the weekend as they continue with their sights set on Olympic qualification and both Buffs netted strong results.

Hyncicova, working with her Czech Republic National Team, was in France at the Premanon-Les Tuffes OPA Continental Cup races and had a fifth place finish in the 10K classic on Saturday. She finished in a time of 35:10.2 and was second among Czech's to finish, only trailing race winner Katerina Berouskova who took first in the event.

Her 10K freestyle race scheduled for Sunday was canceled.

Ketterer, a member of the German National Team, was also in France competing in the FIS Wold Cup held at Val d'Isere. He recorded the first top 30 finish of his career in the men's slalom. In three previous World Cup slalom starts, two in Austria last January and one this November, Ketterer did not finish in the top 30 on the first run to have a chance to get the second run and chase World Cup points.

On Sunday with "persistent and heavy snowfall that started early in the morning and went on through the day" according to FIS-ski.com, he had a first run time of 51:03 to put in inside the top 30 at 29th overall out of 73 competitors. He then moved up three spots with his second run that clocked in at 56:30 to help him place 26th overall with a two-run time of 1:47.33. Ketterer earned 5.0 World Cup points for he result.

"First World Cup points for me in a tough race in Val d'Isere yesterday," Ketterer wrote on his Facebook page. "Happy to make top 30, but my second run was a mess. There is work to be done on slick surfaces."

Ketterer was also on the start list for Saturday's giant slalom, but did not race in the event.

Next up for the two Buffaloes are likely more World Cup starts as they continue on with their Olympic qualification.

Though not set at this point, Hyncicova had said before she left Boulder that she would likely race in the World Cup event in Toblach, Italy on Dec. 16 (10K freestyle) and Dec. 17 (10K classic pursuit).

For Ketterer, his next World Cup slalom opportunity comes Dec. 22 at Madonna di Campiglio, Italy.
