Soccer 2017 In Review

BOULDER - In a season that culminated with Colorado's fourth NCAA Tournament berth in the last five years, there were plenty of highlights.
The list includes a 2-1 win over Denver in the NCAA opener, a school record for shutouts (14) and goals-against average (0.61) in a season, and four players — Taylor Kornieck, Joss Orejel, Jalen Tompkins and Becca Rasmussen — named to the all-region team by the coaches association, tying the program record for most all-region honorees.
But in terms of individual moments, a few stand out:
— Early in the season, freshman Marty Puketapu scored three goals in a 6-0 Colorado win over UC Riverside. It was just the second hat trick ever by a CU freshman, with the first recorded by Nikki Marshall in 2006. Puketapu's three goals in just 21:44 is also the earliest hat trick in school history.
— In a 6-1 win over rival Denver in mid-September, Buffs Tatum Barton and Kornieck scored just 14 seconds apart (46:23 and 46:37). The back-to-back goals are the fastest consecutive goals in school history and 15th-fastest in NCAA history.
— In Colorado's 2-0 win at Utah to end the regular season, Buffs keeper Tompkins broke the Colorado record for longest shutout streak, a record that extended to 536 minutes, 3 seconds in the team's ensuing NCAA win over DU. Down the stretch of the regular season, the Buffs recorded shutouts against Arizona State (3-0), Arizona (0-0, 2 OT), Oregon State (1-0), Oregon (2-0) and Utah (2-0). Tompkins' streak finally came to an end in the first half against Denver.
