Women's Outdoor Track 2017 In Review

December 29, 2017 | Track and Field

BOULDER - Over the years, the Colorado women's track team has consistently produced some of the nation's best steeplechase runners.

In 2017, it was Colorado's Madie Boreman keeping that tradition alive for the Buffs. The CU freshman served notice that she is ready to put her name alongside such CU legends as Jenny (Barringer) Simpson and Emma Coburn when she raced to a second-place finish at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.

Boreman did not even have one of the nation's top 10 times heading into the championships, but she quickly made it clear that she was ready to be a contender when she clocked a personal best 9:51.00 in the preliminaries. Two nights later, she shaved more than three seconds off that time, finishing in 9:46.8. Boreman outkicked a Penn State runner down the stretch to move from third to second and put her name in fourth place on CU's all-time performers list — a list that represents six NCAA national titles.

Along with Boreman, the Buffs earned three other All-America honors, helping CU to a 12th-place finish in the team standings (the best since 2005). Sophomore Dani Jones finished fifth in the 1,500 for first-team All-America designation and Erin Clark finished fifth in the 10K for first-team honors and 16th in the 5K for second-team designation.

The CU women, coached by Mark Wetmore and Heather Burroughs, also recorded a third-place finish at the Pac-12 championships, their best in that meet, with Boreman (steeplechase), Clark (10K) and Jones (1,500 and 5K) all claiming individual titles — giving the Buffs a distance events sweep. Clark's win was her third overall conference title.

Sport Supervisor Cory Hilliard On Outdoor Track

"There were lots of exciting things both in-house with the teams and concurrently with the World Championships.  Madie Boreman getting second in the steeplechase and the history that we have with that event, it was exciting to see that.  Then having Emma Coburn get a World Championship and set the American Record and meet record in London was a neat connection with steeple, especially here. Jenny Simpson, same thing, with that kick to see her finish second in the 1,500 at the World Championships.

Then going back to the season.  We had Isaiah Oliver, he stood out, coming off such a great football season and then doing so well in decathlon was exciting, setting school records and finishing fourth int eh Pac-12.  Once we got to the NCAAs, the distance guys took over and having John and Joe do well in the 5K, Ben in the 1500, continuing that dominance in the distance events.  Personally, it was seeing the connection in the steeplechase between the women."
