Kiernan and Paul Named CU Athletes of the Week

Darby Kiernan (women's lacrosse) and Jeremy Paul (men's golf) were named CU Athletes of the Week for their performances from February 12-19.
Colorado women's lacrosse is ranked No. 9 in the nation. Junior attacker Kiernan started in both games last week, leading the Buffs to a 2-0 record that included an 11-7 win against then-No. 16 UMass and a 22-3 victory over Stetson.
In the first game of the weekend, Kiernan recorded four goals and an assist for five points to lead CU against UMass. She was 3-of-5 on free position shots and had 10 total shots in the game, nine of which were on goal. In the following contest against Stetson, Kiernan recorded 19 draw controls, which broke an MPSF record (15) and tied the fifth best in NCAA history. Only two others in NCAA history have ever had 19 or more draw controls in a single game. Additionally she added a goal and two assists.
CU is also 3-0 – its best start in program history.
Colorado men's golf is ranked No. 18 in the nation. Senior Paul was CU's top performer in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, as he led the Buffaloes to a runner-up finish.
Paul tied for third with an 8-under 208 score on the 7,322-yard, par-72 Classic Club course layout. He finished with a 1-under 71, on the strength of three birdies and 13 pars against two bogeys, which came on the heels of a career-best 64 in the second round. Two of those birdies came on the last three holes to secure a top five finish, and his 14 for the weekend tied for the fourth-most in the field. Consistent across the board, he tied for second in par-3 scoring (3-under collectively) and in par-4 scoring (1-under); he was 4-under on the par-5 holes, 16th-best.
Paul's third-place effort (73-64-71—208) was his 20th top 10 finish of his career, breaking one of the oldest standing records in Colorado golf; he had been tied with Steve Jones, the 1996 U.S. Open champion. Jones had 19 such efforts in his career, which spanned 1977-81. It was also Paul's 26th top 20 finish, tying him for second with Jones and Derek Tolan (2005-09), and now one back of Kane Webber's 27 he set from 1999-2004.

In women's basketball, senior Haley Smith scored the 1,000th point of her career with a team-high 23 points in a 76-66 win over Oregon on Sunday. She also had 11 rebounds in the game for her fourth career double-double. Smith also had eight points, six rebounds and a career-high five steals in a 54-49 loss to No. 11 Oregon State.
In men's basketball, junior George King Averaged 12.5 points, 5.5 rebounds while shooting 50 percent from the field and 60 percent from 3-point range in games at Oregon State and Oregon. King had a team-high seven rebounds at Oregon State, leading the Buffaloes in that category for the 11th time this season. At Oregon, King led Colorado in scoring for the fourth time this season with 18 points, recording his 20th double-figure scoring game this year. He tied a season-high with two assists
In men's skiing, freshman David Ketterer won the slalom in a FIS race held at Winter Park on Saturday. He won the race by 1.82 seconds. He also finished second in Sunday's running of the giant slalom.
In women's skiing, senior Katie Hostetler had a pair of top 10 finishes in the FIS races at Winter Park over the weekend. She finished 10th in the slalom race Saturday and was fifth in the giant slalom on Sunday.
In track and field, junior Rajon O'Quinn took home two event titles at the Joe Davies Classic to pace the Buffs on Saturday. O'Quinn recorded a personal best mark of 5-10/1.78 in the high jump, clearing a height that was almost 10 inches higher than the second place finisher McKayla Bauer, (Northern Colorado) who recorded a 5-0.25/1.53 jump. O'Quinn also captured the 60 meter event title with a time of 7.48. This PR time in the 60 meters moves her into fourth all-time for CU history.
The Buffs also had a strong showing in the men's shot put as sophomore Aaron Haigler had a huge day placing first in the event with a PR mark of 47-8/14.53. This is only the second showing for Haigler this season as he beat his previous PR by well over a meter.
