February 22, 2017 | Lacrosse

BOULDER — Awards keep coming in for the Colorado women's lacrosse team as junior Darby Kiernan was selected as the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week, becoming the first Buffalo to earn the honor.

Kiernan, who was honored earlier this week as the MPSF Offensive Player of the Week and the CU Female Athlete of the Week, helped the Buffs to a 2-0 record last week with wins against then-No. 16 UMass and Stetson where she totaled eight points with five goals and three assists.

In the 11-7 victory over UMass, Kiernan recorded four goals and an assist for five points to lead CU. She was 3-of-5 on free position shots and had 10 total shots in the game, nine of which were on goal. In the following 22-3 win against Stetson, Kiernan recorded 19 draw controls, which broke an MPSF record (15) and tied the fifth best mark in NCAA history. Only two others in NCAA history have ever had 19 or more draw controls in a single game. Additionally Kiernan added a goal and two assists in the victory.

This season Kiernan is averaging 8.33 draw controls per game, which leads the MPSF and is fifth in the NCAA.

CU (3-0) is currently ranked in all three polls. They are 13th in the IWLCA Coaches Poll, ninth in the Inside Lacrosse media poll and 11th in the NIKE/US Lacrosse poll. The Buffs host UC Davis on Sunday, Feb. 26, at Kittredge Field. Opening draw is set for 12 p.m.
