Buffs’ Bid For Second Straight Win Falls Short

March 26, 2017 | Tennis

BOULDER. — Colorado's bid for consecutive conference wins ended on Sunday afternoon as the Buffaloes fell 5-2 to the Washington Huskies.

The loss dropped CU to 9-6 overall and 1-3 in the Pac-12, while UW improved to 13-4 overall and 2-1 in Pac-12. The Buffs were coming off a win over Washington State at home on Friday.

WHAT HAPPENED
The Huskies swept doubles with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 for an early 1-0 lead in the match.

CU evened the team score at the No 2 singles spot with Louise Ronaldson. She beat Washington's Nour Abbes in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Ronaldson picked up her first Pac-12 win on the season.

Annabelle Andrinopoulos and Chloe Hule both had tough matchups as they dropped their matches in straight sets. Andrinopoulos faced off against Washington's Miki Kobayashi and battled hard but fell 6-4, 6-4. Hule tried to force a third set as she battled in the second but couldn't overcome Washington's Alexis Prokopuik and fell 6-3, 6-4.

The match was decided at the No. 6 singles spot as Brigitte Beck fell to Washington's Katarina Kopcalic 6-4, 6-2.

Nuria Ormeño Ruiz rallied for three sets at the No. 1 singles spot. She dropped the first set 6-3, but came back for a 6-1 win in the second. With the match already clinched by UW, Ormeño Ruiz and Stacey Fung played out the rest of their match into a tie breaker third where Ormeño Ruiz fell 7-6 in a tight back and forth battle.

Kyra Wojcik pulled out a win in a very close matchup against Kenadi Hence of Washington. Wojcik dropped the first set 7-6 but rallied to a 6-1 victory in the second. The third set was a tough matchup going both ways but Wojcik settled in and pulled out the 7-6 victory to earn the Buffs another point.

QUOTABLE (Head Coach Nicole Kenneally)
Overall
"Today we once again proved that we belong in the Pac-12. That is the best I have had a team compete in a 48 hour back to back period in several years. I am really happy that they felt what it means to compete on that level and to compete consistently and to fight the whole way. Whether things are going great or things are not on the court they continued to find a way. And in the Pac-12, you have to do that because every team is tough. Obviously, Washington has had a great year so far and for us to extend them the way we did is a positive and a step in the right direction. We will continue to build on this weekend."

On Individual Performances
"It is Lou's first Pac-12 singles win, which is fantastic. It is good for her to get on the board in that way. Nuria played like a leader and a senior. She fought all the way, she had her opportunities and it was maybe a millimeter from being there today. But at the same time, she could not have done anything more. For Kyra to turn around and play that way today I am just really proud of not only her but the entire team. The entire lineup was fantastic.
