Buffs Finish Tied for Second After Day 1 of Anuenue Spring Break Classic

March 27, 2017 | Women's Golf

KAPALUA, HI - The University of Colorado women's golf team opened the Anuenue Spring Break Classic on Monday tied for second place, posting solid rounds from all five scorers through the first 18-holes of action.

The 6,012-yard, par 72 Kapalua Bay Course proved to be difficult for the entire field, as not one of the 15 teams competing finished below par.

The 33rd-ranked Buffs carded a 5-over par, 293 while No. 7 UCLA leads the tournament at 3-over par (291). Three other Pac-12 school finished in the top-five of the tournament including top-ranked Stanford at 11-over (299) and No. 4 Arizona State at 9-over (297). No. 42 San Jose State rounded out the top-five tied for second place with Colorado.

"Overall, the team played well in windy conditions," said women's golf head coach Anne Kelly. "This is a tough course that never lets up. It takes a lot of focus and concentration to play it well. As a team, I think everyone felt they left a few shots out there. We could have made a few more putts or made better decisions, but overall we had a good, steady opening round."

25th-ranked Esther Lee is tied for second after posting a one-under par, 71. The senior was one of only three other golfers in the 90-player field to score under par. She tallied three birdies and two bogeys to go along with 13 pars. After starting her round with five straight pars, Lee went back and forth birdieng her sixth and eighth holes, but bogeying her seventh and ninth holes. She finished her remaining nine holes at one-under.

Junior Brittany Fan posted an even-par, 72 and is tied for fourth place with four other golfers. Fan tallied two birdies and two bogeys to go along with 14 pars. She started off strong, birding two of her first six holes. However, after notching five straight pars, Fan bogeyed two of her final seven holes.

96th-ranked Kirsty Hodgkins carded a two-over, 74, making her tied for 16th. The freshman had 13 pars, two birdies, two bogies and one double-bogey. She pared her first three holes before her first bogey on the 144-yard par-3 No. 17. Hodgkins then birdied two of her next three holes (472-yard par-5 No. 1 and 176-yard par-3 No. 3) before paring four straight. After her second bogey, she posted three straight pars before recording a double-bogey on her second to last hole, 120-yard par-3 No. 12.

Freshman Robyn Choi shot a 4-over par, 76. She started on No. 15, the 451-yard par 5, with a par before double-bogeying the 324-yard No. 16. After five straight pars, Choi finished her final 11 holes two-over. In total, she had 13 pars, three bogies, one birdie and one double-bogey.

Sophomore Gillian Vance posted a 6-over, 78. After posting back-to-back bogeys on her first two holes (No. 15 and No. 16), she pared the 144-yard No. 17 and birdied No. 18, the 530-yard par 5. Vance was 2-over through her next 11 holes before bogeying the final three holes of her round.

Competing individually, redshirt junior Tori Glenn is in with a 9-over par, 81. Starting off her round on the 324-yard No. 16 with a bogey, Glenn could never recover as she would post a score of par or better on only nine of her 18 holes.

"Esther made some good putts today, under par on this course is a good round," said Kelly. "Brittany and Kirsty were very close to shooting under par and played consistent golf today. This team is working hard and ready to take on any challenges this Hawai'i course presents to them"

UCLA's No. 15 Lilia Vu is in first among the individuals shooting a five-under, 67.

The 56-hole Anuenue Spring Break Classic will continue on Tuesday with tee times set for 11:45 a.m. MDT for the second round of play. The tournament will conclude on Wednesday with the third and final round.
