March 28, 2017 | Women's Golf
KAPALUA, HI - The University of Colorado women's golf team took a step back in the second round of the Anuenue Spring Break Classic on Tuesday, dropping behind No. 4 Arizona State (4-over) and 42nd-ranked San Jose State (9-over).
UCLA still leads the tournament at 4-under after posting a score of 7-under today.
Despite shooting 9-over at the 6,012-yard, par 72 Kapalua Bay Course, the 33rd-ranked Buffs are now in fourth at 14-over for the tournament and just one stroke ahead of top-ranked Stanford who are at 15-over.
"Today was a bit of a battle," said women's golf head coach Anne Kelly. "The team played some really good golf, but we struggled with a few holes and not many birdies dropped."
Senior Esther Lee is tied for sixth at even-par for the tournament after posting a 1-over par, 73. The 25th-ranked player in the country tallied two birdies and three bogeys to go along with 13 pars. Lee pared her first six holes before bogeying the 355-yard, par-4 No. 7. She then rebounded by notching two straight birdies on No. 8 (162-yard, par-3) and No. 9 (413-yard, par-4) to finish the front nine at 1-under. However, Lee finished her final nine holes at 2-over with bogeys on No. 11 (366-yard, par-4) and No. 17 (144-yard, par 3).
Brittany Fan carded a 2-over, 74 and is tied for ninth with seven other golfers at 2-over for the tournament. The junior tallied one birdie and two bogeys with 16 pars for the round. Starting on No. 1, Fan pared her first five holes before birdieing the par-5, 471-yard No. 6. However, she followed that up with a bogeys on No. 7 and No. 9. She finished the back nine of her round 1-over with her other bogey coming at No. 16 (324-yard, par-4).
Freshman Kirsty Hodgkins posted a 3-over, 75, making her tied for 18th. The No. 96 ranked player in the country had 12 pars, two birdies, three bogies and one double-bogey. A rough start to her round, Hodgkins was plus-four through her first six holes. She settled down after that, posting a score of 1-under through her remaining 12 holes including birdies on No. 15 (451-yard par-5) and No. 18 (530-yard par-5).
Robyn Choi carded a 3-over par, 75. In total, she had 10 pars, four birdies, two bogies, one double-bogey and one triple bogey. The freshman started on No. 3, the 176-yard par-3, with a bogey before rebounding and birdieing three of her next nine holes. However, Choi could not keep it going, as she would finish her final eight holes at 4-over, triple-bogeying the 333-yard, par-4 No. 13 and notching a double-bogey on No. 17. A birdie on the par-5, 472-yard No. 1 kept her tied for 23rd in the tournament.
"Esther played pretty well adn didn't putt badly, but she just couldn't convert many of her birdie opportunities," said Kelly. "Brittany fought hard all day made some great par saves. The freshmen, Robyn and Kirsty, both had a couple of rough holes, but they maintained their composure and held their rounds together."
Sophomore Gillian Vance is in with a 7-over, 79. She started her round off strong with a par on her first hole of the day, the 357-yard, par-4 No. 4, and birdieing the 154-yard, par-3 No. 5. However, after posting two pars, Vance would bogey eight of her next 12 holes before finishing her second round with two pars. She had one birdie, eight bogeys and nine pars.
Competing individually, redshirt junior Tori Glenn shot a 12-over par, 84. Starting off her round on the 324-yard No. 16, Glenn would only par eight holes on her round while notching eight bogeys and two double-bogeys.Â
No. 15 Lilia Vu from UCLA shot a 6-under, 66 pushing her first place lead among individuals to nine strokes (11-under for the tournament) over San Jose State's My Leander in second (2-under). However, low round of the day and tournament came from Arizona State's Linnea Strom who carded a 7-under, 65, which puts her tied for second.
"We are not happy with today's round, but I continue to be very proud of this team and how much heart they have," said Kelly. "They are determined to come out and give it their all tomorrow."
The 56-hole Anuenue Spring Break Classic will conclude Wednesday with tee times set for 11:45 MDT for the third and final round.
