Fusco Selected Alpha Lacrosse National Player Of The Week

March 07, 2017 | Lacrosse

BOULDER — For the second time in a month, the Alpha Lacrosse National Player of the Week is a Colorado Buffalo.

CU senior attacker Johnna Fusco earned the honor on Tuesday, garnering 41% of the fan vote. She beat out Boston College's Sam Apuzzo (26%), Florida's Sammi Burgess (17%) and Stony Brook's Kylie Ohlmiller (16%) for the honor.

Fusco led the Buffs, who are currently ninth in the media poll and 10th in the coaches' poll, to wins against then-No. 14 Denver and Marquette last week in Boulder. In those games, she combined for nine goals and three assists.

The Marietta, Ga. native single-handily scored more goals than No. 14 Denver on March 3 as the Buffs powered past the Pioneers 14-3. Fusco had five goals in the game, tying her career-high, and added two assists for seven points. Fusco had seven shots in the game, all of which were on goal, went 1-1 on free position attempts and earned three draw controls.

Fusco did not let up in the second game, a 20-6 victory against MU, scoring four goals. She added one assist for five points. Fusco went 3-4 on free position attempts and again earned three draw controls. She also recorded one ground ball.

On February 14, senior goalkeeper Paige Soenksen earned the Alpha Lacrosse national honor after tying a career-high with 19 saves against then-No. 9 Northwestern. She became the first Buff to ever earn the national honor as the Buffs upset NU 11-10 in overtime to start the season on Feb. 12.

The Buffs are 6-0 for the first time in school history and will face another top-10 opponent in No. 6/5 Penn State on Sunday, March 12.
