Women’s Golf Holds Steady In Third at Silverado Showdown

April 10, 2017 | Women's Golf

NAPA CALIF. – Behind a 69 from Kirsty Hodgkins in the second round, the University of Colorado women's golf team finished strong and ended the day in third place at the Silverado Showdown here at the Silverado Resort and Spa.

Playing in one of its most challenging fields this season, the Buffs finished out the second day of the 54-hold tournament in third place at 1-under 287 to give them a second round score of 1-over 577. Besides CU, the 18-team field includes eight other schools who are currently ranked in the top 40 of the latest Golfweek poll.

The Pac-12 schools are dominating the standings after 36 of 54 holes. Stanford is currently leading the way with a 17-under 559 with No. 6 ranked UCLA only five strokes back in second place at 12-under 564. The Buffs hold on to their third place spot with Northwestern only four strokes back at 581. California and Iowa State round out the top-five teams at 7-over 583.

"I was pleased with the overall one under finish but I feel like we still left a lot of shots out there," head coach Anne Kelly. "Everyone's playing really solid golf we just need to make a few more birdies and eliminate a few more mistakes so we can give teams like UCLA and Stanford a run for their money."

Freshman Kirsty Hodgkins led the way for the Buffs firing out her first Sub 70 round of golf this spring season with a 3-under 69. She moved up 10 spots and is now tied for fifth place at a 141 or 3-under. Hodgkins started out her morning strong posting 7 pars and two birdies to start 2-under. She began her back nine with two straight birdies and with only one struggle on hole 13, Hodgkins hung tough and finished out strong to get her 3-under 69 score.

Brittany Fan shot a second round even par 72 and is tied for 12th at 1-under 143 through two rounds. Fan started her morning solid finishing her front nine at 1-under. She went up and down through the back nine recording three bogeys and two birdies to finish at even par.

Senior Esther Lee sits tied for 16th at even par 144 after shooting a 1-over 73 in the second round. Lee was up and down through the first nine holes as she collected three birdies along with three bogeys to finish even par. Lee then settled down a little to fire out four straight pars and closed out her second round with a birdie on hole 17.

Robyn Choi rebounded quite nicely moving up 10 spots in her second round with a 1-over 73 and is at 5-over over 149 in the second round. Choi started off the day solid with a birdie and two bogeys on her front nine, but her consistency shined through as she recorded nine straight pars on the back nine to finish at 1-over.

Sophomore Lauryn Keating was the first Buff to finish on the day fighting through some tough holes as she finished at 14-over 86. Through two rounds Keating sits in 90th place with a 21-over 165. Keating struggled on hole No. 9 for the second day in a row recording another triple bogey on the hole. She added nine bogeys and seven pars on the day.

Rebounding from an illness, Gillian Vance competed as an individual shooting a 12-over 84. Vance was only 4-over throught the first nine holes but recorded three double bogeys on the back to go up 8-over.

Stanford's Andrea Lee leads the way as she sits at 8-under 136. Lilia Vu (UCLA) and Hannah Kim (Northwestern) is only one stroke back at 7-under 137. Stanford's Casey Danielson moved up one spot and is now sitting fourth at 6-under 138, while a group of six golfers including Kirsty Hodgkins are in fifth place at 3-under 141.

Tomorrow Tuesday April 11, the Buffs will wrap up the final day at the Silverado Showdown, with a shotgun start beginning at 9:00 a.m. MT.
