AZUSA, Calif. – University of Colorado sophomore Isaiah Oliver broke three 10-year-old school records in the decathlon and currently sits in first place at the California Invitational here Wednesday. Â
WHAT HAPPENED
Isaiah Oliver is sitting nicely in first place (CU Invite 'A' Section) in the decathlon with 4,044 points after the first day of competition. Oliver started the day with a third-place finish in the 100 meters, finishing in 10.84. Just as he did in the indoor season Oliver, broke yet another school record as he clinched the CU decathlon 100-meter school record. This record was previously owned by Jordan Hudgens, who ran his time of 10.87 in May of 1997. 23-7.25. Oliver went on to add a decathlon school record in the long jump landing a 7.18/23-6.75 mark to finish second and earn 857 points. This record was last set by Grant Cleghorn in May of 1997.
Â
In the final event of the day Oliver clocked an impressive 47.58 in the 400 meters to break another one of Jordan Hudgens decathlon records from 1997. In the shot put Oliver tossed a 12.23/40-1.50 mark to tie for seventh and add 620 points to go along with a sixth place finish in the high jump at 6-4/1.93.
Â
Teammate Andrew Ghizzone is also competing in the 'A' section of the decathlon and is in 13th place with 3,530 points after the first day of competition. Ghizzone had a very solid start to his day placing 15th in the 100 meters with a 11.51 time. This time is only .02 off his personal best time. Ghizzone also had a very good long jump landing a PR mark of 6.89/22-7.25 to finish tied for sixth and earn 788 points. In the final event of the day, Ghizzone clocked a 50.04 to round out his first day of competition.

In the women's heptathlon, Maja Wichhart-Donzo put together four strong events and currently sits in fourth overall with 3,132 points in a very competitive field. Her 200 meters moved her up four spots as she clocked a 24.55 to finish second and earn 929 points. QUOTABLE (Assistant Coach, Lindsey Malone)
"Today was pretty spectacular. Isaiah broke three of our heptathlon school records, I think his finish in the 400 was the most impressive thing I have seen. That was six and a half hours after they started competition. And yet he was still able to run that very fast time which is also eighth in the conference. Now we have two guys in the 400 in the top eight of the conference which is also pretty exciting."
Â
"Isaiah's composure today was phenomenal. He competed with class and composure. His dad is out here cheering him on which is great."
Â
"It is pretty exciting that his long jump was a great mark but, we know that there is more in there especially for conference here soon. His high jump was great, there were a couple PRs for him throughout the day. Moving into the 400, he just dominated that race right from the beginning, he got out and was really running on his own at the end of that."
Â
"Our goal has been taking what we improved on in practice and making it show up here in competition. You want to have your best performances in your decathlon, but with this being our first one of the season we are also tiding up other elements."
