Tennis Drops 4-1 Match to No. 8 Stanford

April 02, 2017 | Tennis

BOULDER. — The University of Colorado women's tennis team battled and fell 4-1 to another top-10 opponent in Stanford here Sunday afternoon at the CU South Campus Courts.

CU fell to 9-8 overall and 1-5 in Pac-12 Conference play, while Stanford improved to 14-1 (6-0 Pac-12).  Stanford now owns a 10-match winning streak.

WHAT HAPPENED
The Buffs put up a fight in doubles, but could not overcome Stanford's ranked duos. The Cardinal took a 1-0 lead, claiming a hard-fought doubles point with wins at the lower two spots. Louise Ronaldson and Chloe Hule were the bright spot in the doubles lineup defeating No. 47 ranked Stanford's Doyle/Lord 6-3, but the Buffs dropped the No. 2 and 3 double spots.

Chloe Hule and Louise Ronaldson had tough singles matchups against ranked opponents as they both dropped their matches in quick straight sets. Hule faced off against No. 50 ranked Higuchi and fell 6-0, 6-0 while Ronaldson took on No. 14 ranked Melissa Lord and fell in straight 6-0, 6-0 sets as well. Stanford pushed their lead over the Buffs to 3-0.

Nuria Ormeño Ruiz had a stellar day powering past No. 51 ranked Caroline Doyle of Stanford. Ormeño Ruiz's first set was a quick one downing Doyle 6-0. The second set was a little more of a battle for Ormeño Ruiz but she pushed back and settled in to get the 6-4 set and match victory. This is Ormeño Ruiz's second Pac-12 win this season and first victory over Stanford's No. 1 singles player.

The match was decided on court No. 4 as Emily Arbuthnott of Stanford got the win over Kyra Wojcik 6-2, 6-4. The match was then called with Stanford getting the 4-1 match win.

QUOTABLE (Head Coach Nicole Kenneally)
Overall
"The last 10 days we have played really solid and we are continuing to do that. That is the furthest we have extended a Stanford team in our time in the Pac-12. Really proud of the girls. I know they are not feeling 100% but they keep coming out here and giving it their all, which as a coach is all you can ask for. They want it more than they have all season long. It is fantastic that we are in the mindset. To beat Stanford in both No. 1 singles and doubles in the same day is a stepping stone for us. We want to win the whole thing but for the girls to understand they are right there with these Stanford players is fantastic. It is great to be in the Pac-12 conference because the level of competition is that much better and you have to raise your level of play, and the girls are doing just that. "

On Nuria Ormeño Ruiz's Victory
"Caroline Doyle has been a part of at least one National Championship team, as she was on the court a year ago when they won. And, Nuria has been there in nearly every single match she has played her whole career. So, for her to get the satisfaction of that win today against a Stanford Cardinal is fantastic. I am really happy and proud of her.

CU will hit the road next week and head to Los Angeles, Calif. to face UCLA and USC. The Buffs will take on UCLA on Friday April 7 at 2:30 p.m. and then on Saturday face off against USC at 1:00 p.m.
