Buffs Knocked Out In First Round Of Pac-12 Championships

April 26, 2017 | Tennis

OJAI, CALIF.— In the first round of the Pac-12 Championships, Colorado's women's tennis team's season came to an end as they lost their opening match 4-0 to the No. 30 Washington Huskies on Wednesday here in Ojai, California at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club.

Colorado entered the match seeded tenth, and the loss means they end the season with a 9-13 (1-10 Pac-12) record which puts them tenth in the conference ahead of Washington State.  As for the Huskies, they entered the tournament seeded seventh and the win raises their record to 17-8 (6-5 Pac-12) as they will move on to the next round to face the University of California Golden Bears.

What Happened:  Washington came out and took the doubles point to open the match, but CU didn't just roll over and hand the point over to the Huskies, putting up a strong fight and pushing the doubles point to a tiebreaker.

At No. 1 UW's grouping of Miki Kobayashi and Alexis Prokopuik defeated the Colorado pair of junior Louise Ronaldson and freshman Chloe Hule 6-2.

But shortly after UW took the first match Colorado put themselves right back in the fight, when at the No. 3 spot the Buff duo of senior Nuria Ormeño Ruiz and junior Kyra Wojcik defeated Washington's group of Katarina Kopcalic and Lana Slavica 6-4.

The deciding battle was at the No. 2 and after playing to a 6-6 tie, the match and the doubles point was decided in a pressure packed tiebreaker.

In that tiebreaker, Washington's Kenadi Hance and Stacey Fung outlasted CU's Annabelle Andrinopoulos and Brigitte Beck 7-6, giving the doubles point to the Huskies and heading into singles play it meant that Washington held an early 1-0 lead.

In singles the Buffs were outmatched and despite their best efforts UW took the three points they needed to win the match and advance to the next round.

At No. 5 UW got their first point when CU's Hule lost her match to UW's Prokopuik in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.

Following the No. 5 match, UW took their next point at the No. 2 with CU's Andrinopoulos dropping her match to Washington's Kobayashi in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 putting the Huskies up 3-0 in the match.

Washington punched their ticket to the next round at the No. 3 spot when CU's Ronaldson lose her match to UW's Nour Abbes in straight sets 6-4, 7-5, giving Washington the 4-0 first round win.
