Nearly Two Dozen Coaches Participate In NSCAA Open Training Day

April 05, 2017 | Soccer

BOULDER – Nearly two dozen high school and youth club coaches visited Colorado's soccer practice on Wednesday as part of National Soccer Coaches Association of America's Open Training Week. CU head coach Danny Sanchez invited coaches from the area to participate in the event in Colorado's Indoor Practice Facility.

"This is the first time the NSCAA set up something like this and I think it's fantastic," Sanchez said. "Like I told the coaches that came out today, they're welcome anytime; our practices are always open."

The Buffs conducted a full training session in front of the coaches, from warmups through skill sessions and team drills, to the cool-down at the end.

"I think it's great, especially for people who are around the sport a lot and coaching at the youth level," an area club coach said. "You get to come and see the top-level collegiate players from the area and get different training ideas and different training situations. Danny [Sanchez], [assistant coaches] Dave [Morgan] and Jason [Green] do a great job so it's really great to be exposed to a different environment, different ideas and things like that."

The club coach explained that they were able to take several things from CU's training session that they can take back to their teams.

"A lot of big things come from the small details like the warmup, the certain activities they do to prepare the athletes, injury prevention, the smaller points that they're bringing out in the training session," the club coach said. "[Coaches take ideas] from each other; in a lot of training, you see the same ideas, but it's really the coaching points and what they want to bring out of it. Just hearing what they want to get out of the session, the coaching that they're putting forward on these [players] at this level, a lot of it does mirror what you tell younger kids."

Sanchez is hopeful it can become an annual event. He saw the benefits for everyone involved, not just the youth coaches.

"To have a set date around the country where coaches can come in and interact and share ideas—and the ideas go both ways—is great," he said. "I think it gives the local club coaches, the youth coaches and the high school coaches that participated a little bit of insight into how we train and how we prepare to train, [with] recovery, and just our whole program. It was a great day and I hope it's something that we can continue with."
