Buffs Move Up to Ninth After Two Rounds at Columbus Regional

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Freshman Kirsty Hodgkins and Senior Esther Lee rebounded from tough Monday performances to help the University of Colorado women's golf team move up one spot to ninth after two rounds of the Columbus Regional here Tuesday afternoon at the Scarlet Golf Course.

The No. 20th ranked Buffaloes shot an 11-over 299 on the day, 14 strokes better than Monday's first round. That score is the sixth best round of the day as all 18 teams in the field shot over par for the second-straight day on the par 72, 6,416 yard course.

"Overall team played better today," head coach Anne Kelly said. "Kirsty really came through with a very good round today. Brittany had a good day too despite a tough last hole. We have our work cut out for us tomorrow, but I feel confident this team can take on the challenge."

No. 4 ranked Florida holds steady in the top position at 14-over par 590 after shooting a 5-over 293 in the second round. Ohio State moved up one spot after carding one of the best rounds of the day of 1-over 289 to put them only one stroke behind Florida at 15-over par 591. Florida State is in third place at 21-over 597, while South Carolina moved up two positions also shooting a 1-over 289 on the day. Michigan rounds out the top five teams with a two day total of 29-over par 605. Â

Freshman Kirsty Hodgkins shot an even par-72 and is in a five-way tie for 28th after improving her second round by eight strokes. She is at 8-over par 152 after two rounds. Hodgkins started off the day on hole No. 10 and played a very solid back nine recording two birdies and seven pars to begin the day at 2-under. After recording five bogeys on the front nine on Monday, she rebounded to only card two bogeys against her seven pars to finish at even par. Hodgkins is tied for second in par three scoring with a 2.88 stroke average.

Esther Lee improved her score by six strokes in the second round to fire out a 3-over par 75. Lee currently sits tied for 53rd place at 12-over 156. Although Lee did not record any birdies on the day she rallied off 15 pars to give her a team high total of 23 pars. Lee kicked off the morning on the back nine and after recording a bogey on hole No. 14 Lee fired out 12 straight pars.

Brittany Fan currently is tied for 22nd place after shooting a 2-over 74 in the second round. Fan recorded a team high five birdies on the day. Fan started out the day on hole No. 10 and was a little up and down as she fired out two birdies back to back sandwiched in between two bogeys on holes No. 11 and 14. Fan almost closed out the day at 1-under after dropping a birdie on hole No. 8 but struggled with the par 4, hole No. 9 where she collected a triple bogey.

Despite adding three strokes from her Monday round, Robyn Choi shot a 6-over par 78 and currently sits tied for 33rd place at 9-over par 153. Choi began the day on hole No. 10 with the rest of the team but seemed to struggle on the back nine more as she carded three bogeys, a double against one birdie to finish at 4-over. She settled down a little to finish her front nine at 2-over recording one birdie and five pars.

Lauryn Keating had the high round of the day coming in at 11-over par 83 as she is currently in 93rd place. Keating improved her second round score by seven strokes. She began the day on hole No. 10 and although posting a 5-over in the back nine improved her score from Monday by six strokes just in the back nine. Keating went on to struggle a little more on the front nine recording three bogeys and two double.

The NCAA Columbus Regional concludes Wednesday with the third and final round. The top six teams and three individuals who are not members of those squads will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 19-24 in Sugar Grove, Illinois. Live scoring is available at GolfStat.com.
