Trio of Buffs Earn First-Team All-America Honors
June 09, 2017 | Track and Field
Eugene, Ore. – The University of Colorado men finished the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a tri of first team All-America honors here Friday night.
WHAT HAPPENED
Ben Saarel kicked off the day for the Buffs running in his first NCAA finals heat of the 1,500 meters. Saarel started off solid then got pushed back a few spots in the pack. Not liking the pace Saael made his move into first holding it for the 700 meter and 1,100 meter split until the bell lap where Josh Kerr, Justine Kiprotich and Craig Engels took off. Saarel finished in eighth overall with a time of 3:44.78 to earn the team a point.
The Buffs were loaded in the 5,000 meters as Joe Klecker (first-team), John Dressel (first-team) and Zach Perrin (second-team) all earned All-America honors. The unusually slow pace was set by the front group and it held until around the bell lap. Joe Klecker stayed in the top-five for most the race as he crossed the finish line in 14:38.03 to finish seventh overall. John Dressel crossed right behind in eight place with a time of 14:38.03, while Zach Perrin placed 11th (14:41.50)
UP NEXT
Nationals conclude on Saturday with the women. Dani Jones will run in the 1,500, Madison Boreman in the steeplechase and Erin Clark in the 5,000 meters.
QUOTES (Head Coach Mark Wetmore)
"We got a few people on the podium and got ourselves on the team scoreboard which is the goal of course. I think guys are a little disappointed in the final points. I think they would have liked to have finished a couple of places higher."
"Ben got eighth in a really wild and competitive 1,500 meters. If you look at the overall times you will see a whole bunch of guys within a second of each other. Then about the same thing in the men's 5,000. A typical men's pedestrian and cautious race for over half of the way and then mad dash to the finish. Our two sophomores getting on the podium getting seventh and eighth and Zach just missing. He is a rookie in the 5,000 meters having just picked it up this year."
