July 12, 2017 | Women's Golf

BEDMINSTER, N.J. – University of Colorado golfer Robyn Choi is set to compete in the 72nd U.S. Women's Open Championships this week, July 13-16, marking the third time in school history a Buff has qualified for the event.

Choi secured her place among the elite 156-player field back on May 25 at the Riverdale Golf Course. She placed second overall carding a 5-under, 139, 36-hole score. Choi came in one stroke behind the winner, Jennifer Kupcho, who is also an amateur and plays for Wake Forest.

"I am not feeling as nervous at the moment but I think that will change as I step to the first tee," Choi said. "But, I really love this environment and enjoy being able to practice on the same range and putting green with players I see on tv."

Choi joins former Buffs, Jenny Coleman and Jess Wallace as the only other women's golfers to play in the U.S. Open. However, Choi is the first active Buff competing in the U.S. Open as Coleman and Wallace both graduated before playing.

The 2017 U.S Open gets underway at the par-72, 6,732-yard Trump National Golf Club on Thursday, July 13 and concludes Sunday, July 16. Choi will tee-off at 2:09 p.m. on hole No. 1 with Meghan Maclaren and Kyung Kim.

"I just want to enjoy playing in a LPGA tournament. If I play well hopefully I can make the cut but, even if I do not I think I'll still be happy to have been able to play in a major tournament with world class players," Choi said.

NOTABLE:

  • 21 amateur players in the field
