July 20, 2017 | Soccer
SEATTLE – Former Colorado soccer players Emily Bruder and Morgan Stanton have been selected to represent the United States at The World University Games next month. Also known as the 2017 Summer Universiade, The 29th Summer World University Games will be held in Taipei, Aug. 19-30, with over 120 countries competing in 22 sports. Bruder and Stanton are believed to be the first CU student-athletes to represent the United States in soccer at The World University Games.
"This is a fantastic opportunity for Morgan and Emily to represent our university and country on a world stage," CU head coach Danny Sanchez said. "I can't think of a better way to culminate their very successful college careers. We hope they bring home the gold!"
Bruder played just one season for the Buffs after transferring from North Carolina, but made an impact nonetheless. Last season, she scored four goals and had four assists, finishing third on the team with 12 points, while starting 20 of 22 matches at forward. She scored game-winning goals against No. 9 UCLA, Oregon and Iowa. She is no stranger to international competition, playing on numerous youth national teams, including the 2013 U-18 USWNT where she scored four goals and earned 16 caps. She also competed in the 2012 U-17 FIFA World Cup and won the 2012 U-17 CONCACAF championship with the U.S.
Stanton was also a key member for the Buffs during her time in Boulder. She started all 22 matches at defensive-center midfielder a year ago and led the team with 1,894 minutes played. Serving as a team captain, she helped lead the fifth-best defense in the Pac-12, allowing a 0.89 goals-against average, and earned Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 11 when the Buffs surrendered just eight total shot attempts in two games. She played three years at CU after transferring from Santa Clara, leading the Buffs to two NCAA Tournament appearances and starting 60 of 63 matches. Like Bruder, Stanton also has extensive international experience, playing with Bruder on the 2012 U-17 FIFA World Cup team and scoring a goal during that tournament. She's also participated in several youth national team pools.
The two players led CU to one of its best seasons in school history in 2016, helping the Buffs tie the school record for wins with a 15-6-1 record. They tied for second in the Pac-12 with an 8-2-1 record in conference play and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
