Honor Equivalent To Academic All-America
BOULDER —University of Colorado junior golfers Spencer Painton and John Souza were named to the Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars Team for the 2016-17 season, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced Wednesday.
To be eligible for the team, an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full seasons on the collegiate level, participate in at least half of his team's competitive rounds with a stroke average below 76.0 and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2. The recipients must be of high moral character and in good standing at their school.
Transfer students are allowed to have their academic records merged with those at their subsequent school, and thus was the case with both Painton and Souza, who were also named to the honorable mention Pac-12 All-Academic team earlier this year. Painton's cumulative GPA is 3.258 including courses at Kansas, while Souza's is 3.518 that includes his course work at South Mountain Community College.
Souza was fourth on the team in stroke average this past season with a 73.71 mark, while Painton was right behind him in fifth with a 74.21 norm. Both played key roles in CU finishing ranked as the No. 32 team in the nation.
Philip Juel-Berg was honored for both his junior and senior seasons (2014-15, 2015-16), thus at least one Buffalo has made the team for three straight years. Overall, CU golfers have been recipients 19 times, including seven instances where a player has earned the honor twice.
A total of 260 Division I-A student-athletes were recognized with the distinction, an all-time high.
