Kornieck Scores In Overtime To Lift Buffs To Home Win

August 20, 2017 | Soccer

BOULDER - Taylor Kornieck scored one minute and 13 seconds into the second overtime to lift No. 25 Colorado to a 1-0 win over Colorado College on Sunday at Prentup Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED: In a defensive battle, the Buffs were limited in their offensive chances throughout the afternoon. Tatum Barton had a great chance in the 44th minute on a header that took a leaping and diving save to keep it out of the net and Cassie Phillips hit the crossbar in the 71st minute from the top of the box, but those were the closest either team came to scoring before the goal.

Barton set up Kornieck's score, holding the ball just inside the top of the box before sliding it to Kornieck, who finished the ball to the left side of the net off one touch.

KEY STATISTICS: CU outshot Colorado College 16-7 in the match, led by Kornieck's five shot attempts. Scout Watson played the entire second half in goal and made two saves and Jalen Tompkins had one save in the first 45 minutes. Defender Kelsey Aaknes also had a key play in the game, heading a ball off the goal line to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard.

NOTES: It was Kornieck's second career overtime goal, the first coming at 109:58 to upset No. 10 California last season (the latest goal scored in school history) ... it is the ninth time in CU history the Buffs have started a season with back-to-back shutouts and the first since 2014 ... the goal drought 211:13 to start the season is the third-longest in school history behind the 1997 team (219:00) and 2000 (217:41) ... however both of those team started the season 0-2, while this season's team is 1-0-1.

UP NEXT: CU will host TCU at 4:30 p.m. on Friday at Prentup Field. That match will be televised on Pac-12 Mountain Network. The Frogs are 2-0-0 this season with a pair of 5-0 wins over ULM and UTSA.

Danny Sanchez, head coach
On getting the late goal to win in overtime
"Yeah, I give a lot of credit to Colorado College who came out here with a game plan, obviously low pressure, eleven players behind the ball and it was tough. I felt we made an adjustment at half time. I think we added a lot more pressure in the second half and then overtime I thought it was just coming, it was just a matter if we were going to have time to get it done. I mean five to nothing or one to nothing we'll take it. It was a much needed win for the conference, for the team and these things are only going to get tougher from here."

On today's effort compared to Friday and mixing up the lineup
"Yeah, like I said it was tough today. There wasn't a lot of room to operate, there was a block of six, two holding, and four in the back that really stayed home. It was tough for us to break down the first half. Once again we were impatient, but in the second half we changed things up created some space for some of our players, but then the game started to get a little stretched and we started to lose the midfield a little bit. So in overtime we kind of went back to the original plan and I thought in the first overtime we had two or three really good chances and then obviously a very good goal in the end."

On the difference Tatum Barton can make in the lineup
"Yeah, I think it's going to be a certain element of by committee and we're going to rotate players and the players that are performing are going to get opportunities. She did well, she does a really good job of holding the ball up and you can see how she set up that [last] goal. We told her to hold the ball up and see if she could find late runners and she did a great job, that was a nice lay off to Taylor.

On takeaways from playing in the Colorado Cup vs. in-state schools
"It's no different than basketball. volleyball, football, tennis. You know if you're playing in state teams to a certain extent there going to be out for CU, whatever sport it is. If you look at the history of the Colorado Cup results they're really all like this. There's very rarely more than a one or two goal win ever. We expected it, we prepared for it. Obviously we were going to look at the positives for the weekend, that we didn't give up a goal and we won a game and maybe could've got two wins. But at the end of it we know that these are two tough games to prepare us for next weekend, especially for Friday against TCU.

On the different lineups compared to Friday and whether that was due to having Orejel back in the lineup or just experimenting
"I think it was a combination of both. Cassie [Phillips] she ran the most, she expended the most energy of Friday so we wanted to cut her minutes down a little bit. We also wanted to get Joss in the lineup, she got back from her grandpa's funeral so we're glad that she made it back and she earned a starting spot so we put her right back in. We adjusted. Courtney's [Fedor] been training well so we wanted to give her an opportunity, but also Erin's [Greening] been doing well so we wanted to give her an opportunity as well. It was more just to try and get some more player rotation.

On mixing up the lineup to keep people fresh with four games in 10 days
"Yeah at the end of it, especially looking at these teams coming in next week and coming to altitude we should have an advantage. So we need players to stay sharp and keep competing, like Tatum today, you have to take advantage of it."

On how the goal changes the team's mentality heading into the TCU game
"I think that's a good point. I think it took a little weight off of our shoulders. Winning is what it's all about for us so we're glad we got the goal, it would've been nice if it was in the second minute , but maybe sometimes when there's a little more urgency and our backs are against the wall a little bit, maybe we can build off that momentum going into next week. It's a great group, they're great young ladies, either way they would've bounced back, but now there'll be a little more pep in their step this week at training."

Joss Orejel, senior defender

On the difference between today's game and Friday's tie at CSU
"As a back line we came together and made sure we allowed no goals. We need to make sure we get our job done and then leave it to the forwards to get the goal – which they did this game. They have a lot of chances and they are doing awesome up there. Our main goal was to not let anything in and we succeeded.

On the difference a win today made vs. opening the season with two draws
"It definitely is a confidence booster knowing we can do it. We just needed the win to reassure ourselves. Winning is always good – but it's soccer. No one really knows at the end of the day regardless of how good you play."

Tatum Barton, sophomore forward
On the confidence the win gives the team going forward
"I think it was huge for us. It is such a big confidence booster for the forwards and the whole team. It just gets us more excited for what the future holds for us.

On playing such a big role in her first game back in her home state
"It's super exciting. I love Colorado and I'm happy to be home and a part of this team. I missed Colorado. This is a great school and soccer program."

On the focus going forward as an individual
"The focus is being physical up top and scoring goals. I want to be a good teammate and support the team."

On finding her way with the team
"It's hard to get thrown in the mix with new forwards. It takes time to play together and know what the other forward is going to do."

On the team's mentality going into overtime
"I just thought there was no way we were going to lose this. We had so many chances all game and we deserved to win. I think we just gutted it out. I think our fitness really helped in overtime also."
