McKinley Wright IV, Petra Hyncicova Earn UCHealth CU Athlete of the Week Honors
January 10, 2018 | Men's Basketball, Skiing
McKinley Wright IV (men's basketball) and Petra Hyncicova (women's Nordic skiing) have earned the first UCHealth CU Athletes of the Week honors of 2018 for their outstanding performances last week (January 1-7).
Freshman point guard McKinley Wright IV led the CU men's team to a pair of monumental wins this weekend, starring in upsets over fourth-ranked Arizona State and No. 14 Arizona. Wright
fueled CU's second half comeback in Thursday's overtime win over Arizona State, scoring 17 of his 19 points after halftime. He also added five assists, three rebounds and a pair of steals to lift the Buffs' to their first top-5 win in over five years. Then on Saturday, Wright recorded his third double-double of the season, tallying 16 points and 10 assists, as well as grabbing four rebounds in CU's second consecutive top-15 victory, a feat that no team in program history had accomplished previously.
On the women's side, Petra Hyncicova opened her senior season on Wednesday at the U.S. Cross Country Championships, where she was the top collegiate finisher in the women's 10K freestyle. Then in Friday's freestyle sprint races, Hyncicova placed second in the qualifying round, which was the round that counted for RMISA qualification and results. She proceeded to advance through the quarterfinal and semifinal heats to earn a spot in the finals. There, a third-place finish put Hyncicova on the podium at the U.S. Cross Country Championships, an event that began with 146 competitors.
Also nominated for this week's award: Ola Johansen (men's downhill skiing), Alexis Robinson (women's basketball)
Ola Johansen opened up the 2018 NCAA ski season with a second-place finish in the giant slalom at the RMISA Alpine Qualifier on Saturday. Then on Sunday, Johansen won the Montana State Invitational giant slalom event with a two-run time of 2:07.13, his fourth career race victory and third in the giant slalom. Johansen had twice finished second in the giant slalom at his two previous MSU Invite appearances, but finally broke through this year to win it. Johansen used a stellar second to propel himself into first place. His second run time of 1:05.45 was the third fastest overall among collegiate racers and was enough to edge out Utah's Sam Dupratt, who lead the field after the first run, by two tenths of a second.
Alexis Robinson guided the Buffs to a road split in Washington this weekend. Robinson stuffed the stat sheet in a loss to Washington on Friday night, scoring 12 points, grabbing six rebounds, and handing out three assists. Against Washington on Sunday, she exploded for a career-high 22 points on 60% shooting. Robinson added seven boards and three steals to lift the Buffs' to a come from behind win, their first at Alaska Airlines Arena since 2004.
