Buffs Singles Play Improves in Day Two
November 10, 2018 | Tennis
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of Colorado tennis team found redemption Saturday in singles play with three wins in the second day of competition in the San Diego State University Fall Classic II.
Â
A pair of freshmen and a senior worked back into winning ways in the consolation rounds of singles play Saturday, all coming out victorious. Megan Forster opened up with a 6-1, 6-1 defeated of Louise Waite of Eastern Washington, then her teammate Annabelle Andrinopoulos took down another Eastern Washington player in Zoey Nelson by way of straight sets; 6-2, 6-2.
Â
The other singles win came from Ky Ecton, though Ecton did not have as easy of a route to victory. The freshman took on Claire Bouqet of Cal Poly and went 7-5 in the first set before Ecton finished it off with quick work in the second, 6-1.
Â
The lone Buff still in championship contention Saturday was Monica Malinen. The junior faced up against Emily Dush of Utah and went the distance in the first set with a 7-6(5) opening set loss. The second set would also be close at 6-4, but eventually Malinen found defeat. She will compete for third place in her bracket tomorrow.
Â
One Eastern Washington player earned a win against a Buff today as Rylee Braeden defeated Brigitte Beck in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Â
Unlike the first day, the second day of competition was not favorable to Colorado's doubles play. Malinen and Forster were swept in a 6-0 match against a duo from Stanford, followed up by Beck and Andrinopoulos losing to a tandem from Eastern Washington, 6-1.
Â
Singles play will continue tomorrow with four more matches for CU. Tomorrow will be the final day of competition for Colorado Tennis in the 2018 calendar year.
