Ewert Named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week
November 05, 2018 | Volleyball
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of Colorado women's volleyball team's true freshman setter Jenna Ewert has been named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week after leading the Buffaloes to a sweep of Cal and became the first conference team to push No.2 Stanford to five sets, the conference announced Monday.
The Northern California native kicked off the early week with a dominating performance against Cal on Wednesday. She led the team to a sweep of the Golden Bears while posting 34 assists for more than 11 assists per set. She also matched her career-high in kills with six and broke her career-record in blocks with five. Ewert also added nine digs.
In the following match against the second-ranked team in the nation Ewert posted a career-high 53 assists while also earning a double-double with 15 digs. Her efforts helped lead the Buffs to their first-ever five set match at Stanford in school history. It was also just the second time the Cardinal faced a fifth set this season, with the one other occasion coming against the current top-ranked team in the nation in BYU.
This marks the fifth Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honor for Colorado in school history. All three Buffs to earn the honor are on the current team, with Naghede Abu earning the first-ever award and Brynna DeLuzio taking three such honors last season.
Colorado hosts a pair of Arizona teams this weekend for the final home stretch of the season. Friday's match begins at 7 p.m. against Arizona State, while Sunday's senior match against No.20 Arizona begins at noon.
