
Buffs Finish Pac-12 Preview Tied For Third

Hodgkins and Choi Earn Top-Five Finishes
KAILUA KONA, Hawai'i — The University of Colorado women's golf team earned their highest finish at the Nanea Pac-12 Preview on Wednesday afternoon, tying for third.
The Buffs recorded a 1-over 293 in the final round to add to their previous rounds of 290 and 293. Overall CU finished the tournament with an even 876, which is the CU 54-hole par 73 record, and were just two strokes off the winner, Arizona (874).
Prior to this year's third place finish, CU's best had been fourth. The Buffs tied for fourth in 2015 and recorded a 19-over 895.
Arizona, the reigning NCAA Champion, moved up from fourth place on Tuesday, to first place on Wednesday with a final round 290 (2-under). The Wildcats ended the tournament at 2-under 874 (295-289-290) and had a one stroke lead over California, which had been in the lead after two rounds. Cal recorded a final scorecard of 289-292-294 (1-under 875).
"The team really fought hard and came very close to the win!" head coach Anne Kelly said. "This event show just how competitive the Pac 12 is! It was a team effort and closing birdies by Malak (Bouraeda), Haley (Nist), Kirsty (Hodgkins) and Robyn (Choi) made a big difference.
"Overall ball-striking was very good; we just need to putt a bit better. I'm very proud of our team and the effort they have given this fall. I think everyone needs a little break, especially Robyn who has played 22 rounds in the last 26 days or so and has traveled at least 5,000 miles. We will get a bit of work done in the off-season and then go hard in the spring."
The Buffs ended up tied for third with Southern California, which also moved up in the final day. The Trojans were sixth after two rounds (289-296—585) and moved up into third after shooting a 1-under 291 in the final 18 holes. CU was fourth heading into the final hole, but moved up into the tie for third after a birdie from Choi on No. 18.
Colorado not only had a great team performance, but a pair of Buffs, Choi and Hodgkins, recorded top-five finishes. Hodgkins recorded a 3-under 70 in the final round to move from a tie in eighth place, to a tie in third place. Overall, she recorded a 4-under 215 to lead the team, which is the best score ever for a Buff at the tournament. Through the 36 holes, she recorded 11 birdies, 37 pars, five bogeys and one double.
Hodgkins started the day on No. 2. After making two straight pars, she earned her first birdie on No. 4. She recorded three straight pars after than before sinking another birdie on No. 8. She had another par on No. 9 before missing par on No. 10 where she had her only bogey of the round. Through the last nine holes, she earned two more birdies and seven pars to wrap-up her second round at 3-under.
Choi finished tied for fifth with a 3-under 216, which is the second best score at the tournament for the Buffs. In her final round, she was a 1-under 72 with three birdies, one bogey and 14 pars. She recorded seven pars and a pair of birdies on the front nine to go 2-under heading into the back nine. She made five straight pars before recording two bogeys and a par in the next three holes to get to even on the day. On No. 18, she rebounded with a birdie to record a 1-under for the day.
The Buffs had another top-20 finisher with Haley Nist tying for 18th. She recorded a 1-over 74 in the last round and when combined with her previous rounds of 70 and 76, came to a 1-over 220. She earned two birdies, 13 pars and three bogeys on the final day, with one of her two birdies coming on her last hole to secure a 1-over.
Malak Bouraeda tied for 31st with a 6-over 225. She shot a 4-over 77 on Wednesday, which included two birdies, 10 pars and six bogeys. With two holes left in the round, she was able to collect herself and make birdie on her 17th hole. She finished the tournament with one final par to stay at 4-over.
Gillian Vance had a better round on Wednesday, recorded a 5-over 78 with two birdies, nine pars and seven bogeys. Overall, she finished 53rd with a 16-over 235.
Yu-Sang Hou (Arizona), who was in the lead after two rounds, hung on to tie for first after shooting an even 73 in the final round for a final scorecard of 69-71-73 (6-under 213). Tze-Han Lin (Oregon) also finished with a 6-under 213. She shot a 3-under 70 in the last round after recording a 72 and 71, respectively, in the first and second rounds.
The Buffs are now finished with their fall schedule. They will return to the links for their first spring competition, the Northrop Grumman Invitational, Feb. 3-5, at the Palos Verdes Country Club.
NOTES: The Buffs' 876 on the Nanea Golf Club course is the CU record for the best 54-hole score on a par 73.
