News and notes surrounding the CU ski program

BOULDER — This edition of the University of Colorado skiing notebook previews the Buffs' upcoming meet at the New Mexico Invitational, head coach Richard Rokos being profiled by the Pac-12 Network, another strong academic progress report and some scheduling adjustments.

THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO/DREW JUDYCKI MEMORIAL/JADE ENTERPRISES INVITATIONAL: That's the official name of the New Mexico Invite where the alpine and Nordic squads will be split at two different locations. The Nordic races are being held in Crested Butte, Colo., while alpine, which will feature two slalom races (no giant slalom at this meet), is being held at the Red River Ski Area in New Mexico's Taos Ski Valley. The complete weekend schedule is as follows:

Saturday, Feb. 3 - 21K/21K freestyle mass start. Women at 9:25 a.m. and men in a collegiate wave.
Saturday, Feb. 3 – men's and women's slalom.
Sunday, Feb. 4 - 5K/5K Classical individual start.  Men at 9 a.m., women at 10 a.m.
Sunday, Feb. 4 – men's and women's slalom.

Heading into the third team meet of the season, Colorado leads the RMISA thus far in team points (1,294), individual race victories (7), individual podium finishes (21) and most individual top five finishes (32). Click here to view the RMISA miscellaneous stats page, which is a great resource that has the results thoroughly broken down by men and women as well as discipline.

ROKOS PROFILED ON PAC-12 NETWORK: The Pac-12 Network was out in Boulder last week composing a profile piece on CU head coach Richard Rokos. It is set to air live on Friday, Feb. 2 on the Sports Report that starts at 11 p.m. MT. Replays of the show take place every hour Saturday morning from 7 a.m. to noon and the video will be made available on the Pac-12 social channels Facebook and Twitter.

Rokos, who is now in his 28th season as the head coach of the Buffs, talks about his life experiences, from leaving a communist-bound Czechoslovakia with his wife and then-18-month-old daughter, to arriving in America and getting his start to his work at CU where he has led the Buffs to eight NCAA titles and turning what was once essentially an individual sport into a team event at CU.

TOP GPA IN ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT: The Colorado women's skiers recorded a 3.520 GPA for the fall 2017 semester, which was the top term GPA among all teams, male and female, in the athletic department. Their combined cumulative GPA of 3.476 is also the tops in the department.

The women's skiers have now posted 33 consecutive semesters with over a 3.0 GPA, including 12-straight over a 3.3, and in the 44 total semesters (fall and spring) dating back to 1996 when historical GPA records started, the women's team has had the highest term GPA 17 times.

The men's skiers posted a 3.093 term GPA, which was the highest among all men's programs last fall. It was also their 15th consecutive semester above a 3.0 and in the last 44 semesters, the men's squad held the top GPA eight times.

That marks 25 times in the last 44 semesters (56.8 percent of the time) at CU that one of the men's or women's ski teams held the highest term GPA.

RMISA CHAMPIONSHIP SCHEDULE CHANGES: There has been a scheduling change for the RMISA Championships and RMISA Alpine Qualifier that CU will host at Steamboat Springs towards the end of February. The new schedule is as follows:

Feb. 23 – RMISA Championships (slalom)
Feb. 24 – RMISA Alpine Qualifier (giant slalom)
Feb. 24 – RMISA Championships (5/10K classic)
Feb. 25 – RMISA Championships (giant slalom & 15/20K freestyle)

The alpine qualifier is held independent of the RMISA Championships/NCAA West Regional. It is not scored as a team meet, rather is used individually to help towards NCAA qualification points.
