Buffaloes Enjoy Another Solid Second Round In The Desert
PALM DESERT, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team recorded another spectacular second round score on the same course it set a school mark on a year ago, but remained in third place after Saturday's play in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.
California, ranked 15th in the nation, not only maintained but expanded its lead with a 14-under 274 score, giving the Bears a 27-under 549 total through 36 holes. No. 9 Texas Tech held on to second with a 12-under 564 score, but the No. 52 Buffaloes are on the Red Raiders' heels with an 11-under 565 total. No. 21 UCLA and No. 36 Kansas are tied for a distant fourth, both with 3-over 579 tallies.
In matching its third-best single round score of the '17-18 season, Colorado tied a school record for the most consecutive rounds under par with seven, done once previously during the 2013-14 season. All five rounds in the spring have been in red numbers, and the season count for rounds of par or better now stands at 14, two shy of the school mark. In the second round on this same course in 2017, Colorado scored a school record 22-under 266.
Unlike Friday when the Buffaloes got off to a slow start, Saturday was a completely different story as CU was 9-under at the turn. The four scoring for the team had a collective eagle, eight birdies and 26 pars with just one bogey on their 36 holes, setting the stage for a duel for second place throughout the day with Texas Tech.
Senior John Souza continued to pace the Buffalo attack, as he shot a 3-under 69 in the second round on the 7,322-yard, par-72 Classic Club course layout; that improved him to 5-under 139 for the meet, tying him for ninth. It's one shy of his career-best through 36 holes, and he's done so with a team-best nine birdies and 24 pars against just two bogeys and a double. He's 8-under for his last 28 holes, with just one bogey in that span.
Senior Yannik Paul matched Souza's 69 effort and has him a 4-under 140 through two rounds, good for 14th place. He had four birdies and 13 pars with just a single bogey, as he closed his day with nine straight pars on the back side. He's tied for eighth in field in both par-3 (1-under) and par-4 (2-under) scoring. It was Paul's 27th round in the 60s and 49th subpar score, both second all-time in the program.
Senior Spencer Painton carded a 1-under 71 and is 1-under for the meet at 143, tying him for 24th. His round was almost identical to Friday's, with one more birdie (three) and one less par (13) with two bogeys.
Sophomore Daniel O'Loughlin posted CU's third 69 score of the day, his 11th round of par or better out of 15 this season and his fourth in the 60s, which brought him back to under par for the tournament. At 1-under 143, he is also tied for 24th after scoring an eagle, three birdies and 12 pars against just two bogeys. He scored his first eagle as a Buff on No. 8 (433-yard, par-4) by holing out with a 52-degree wedge shot 119 yards from the pin.
Souza, Painton and O'Loughlin are all 4-under on the par-5s here, tied for seventh-best in the field on holes where eagles have been very rare and par has proven to be a good score much of the time.
Freshman Trevor Olkowski rebounded from an opening round 75 to card an even-par 72, giving him a 3-over 147 total heading into the final round; that has him tied for 45th. He had a steady round Saturday, scoring a birdie and a tourney-high 16 pars with just one bogey, with his 28 pars overall tied for the most in the field.
Three Buffaloes are among 20 players competing here as individuals. Sophomore Victor Bjorlow recorded a second straight 3-over 75, freshman Cole Krantz shot a 5-over 77 with junior Wilson Belk turning in a 7-over 79.
Bjorlow had a birdie and 13 pars, similar to his Friday numbers, while Krantz almost matched his exactly (13 pars, five bogeys); they are tied for 76th and 100th, respectively while being tied for fifth in the meet, along with Painton, with 27 pars overall. Belk opened and closed with three straight pars but his 12 holes in-between were a bit of a rollercoaster ride, as he had two birdies, five bogeys and two doubles that left him with a 17-over 161 total, tying him for 128th.
Wyoming Dan Starzinski shot a tournament-best 8-under 64 to assume the lead for medalist honors, as he is with a 11-under 133; he's playing as an individual and is not scoring for the Cowboys team total. He thus leads the overall field and those competing by themselves.
"Everybody was in it today, and it's always good when your 'throw-out' score is an even par," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "The guys were in control of their games from tee to green, and we capitalized on a lot of our opportunities, so that makes the game a lot easier. If you shoot under par here, you've played well, so those are all good numbers. I saw a lot of good things overall, and am really pleased with how the scorers played.California, ranked 15th in the nation, not only maintained but expanded its lead with a 14-under 274 score, giving the Bears a 27-under 549 total through 36 holes. "Cal is playing really well," he added. "Even though we're a ways back, we still feel we're within striking distance. It's a golf course our guys feel comfortable on, which certainly helps. You never know what's going to happen, so we're still definitely focusing on trying to win the tournament."
Cal and the Buffaloes have four of their scorers in the top 25, with their fifth scorers both tied for 45th.
The third and final round will begin at 8:00 a.m. MST Sunday; Colorado will again begin play at 8:50 off the No. 1 tee and will be paired with the same three teams as on Saturday (California, Texas Tech and UCLA).
NOTES: Colorado's previous best single round scores came in the Hawai'i Princeville Intercollegiate (a 16-under 272) and in its own Mark Simpson Invitational (13-under 275); it also had a 10-under 278 in the final round of the Air Force Miranda Invite … CU's 22-under 266 in the second round last year not only set a school record, it was the NCAA season-best, thus the Buffs are 32-under par in the last two second 18 holes here ... CU has participated in this tournament five times; after tying for 13th in 2012, the Buffaloes have finished second on four straight occasions (2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017) … The third round has proven to be CU's best thus far this season, owning a 283.0 average for five meets (or 5-under par as all courses to date have been par-72 layouts) … Play continued to be on the slow side, with rounds taking about five-and-a-half hours Saturday, but were a bit quicker than Friday's six-hour marathons … The average score for the 135-man field through two rounds stands at 74.39; Saturday's 74.14 norm was a bit lower than Friday's (74.64) … O'Loughlin's eagle was one of just four on Saturday, with just nine total overall (two have come on par-4s) … Colorado's leads the field in pars (126) and is fourth in birdies (32), while playing the par-5 holes the best along with Cal (14-under), the par-4's second-best (plus-6) and the par-3's third-best (even) … Colorado is in great position to dramatically improve its season winning percentage; the Buffs came in with a 55-26-4 mark against Division I competition (67.1 percent).
