February 27, 2018 | Women's Golf
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The University of Colorado women's golf team played its final round here in the Bruin Wave Invitational on Tuesday and earned a sixth-place finish. The tournament hosted by UCLA and Pepperdine was played at the Par 72, 6,323-yard San Luis Obispo Country Club.
Over the final 18 holes, Colorado shot 309, en route to a 304-315-309—928 or 64-over par final scorecard. No. 10 ranked Southern California was the team champion carding a 32-over par, 896. Eight shots back No. 1 UCLA took second at 40-over par, 904 with No. 4 Stanford just two strokes back at 42-over par, 906. San Diego State fell one place into fourth at 49-over par, 913 with Washington rounding out the top-five teams at 50-over par, 914.
"The day didn't quite come together as we had hoped," said head coach Anne Kelly, "This is a very tough golf course and if a player isn't quite on with their short game it can be penalizing. Kirsty was the highlight of the day shooting +1 for the day which was a very good score. We played the front nine well, but overall struggled at bit on the back. It's a good learning experience and we will need to get some good short game practice in before the next event."
Sophomore Kirsty Hodgkins earned her seventh top-20 finish, tying for 11th place overall. In the final round, she teed off on hole No. 1 and coasted easily through the front nine carding one bogey to finish 1-over. Hodgkins' back nine included one birdie and bogey to finish 1-over par 73. Hodgkins concluded the tournament at 12-over par (73-82-73—228), while leading the Buffs with 35 total pars.
Senior Brittany Fan struggled a little in her last round carding a 6-over par 78 to give her a two-day scorecard of 75-77-78—230. In Fan's final round, her front nine was up and down collecting two birdies, two bogeys and a double. Fan's 18th place finish marks her sixth straight top-20 finish this season.
Robyn Choi 5-over par 77 in the last round and 15-over par, 73-81-77—231 for the two-day event. After playing her first nine holes, Choi was 1-over par but struggled a little more on the back nine collecting two bogeys and a double. Both Choi and Hodgkins shot the most birdies for the Buffs with 5.
Freshman Alisha Lau posted an 81 in the final round to drop 12 places to tie for 51st overall. She went 9-over par on Tuesday and posted a 83-75-71—239 final scorecard. Lau was strong on her front nine after teeing off on hole No. 1 only carding a 2-over par, but she couldn't hang in adding seven bogeys on the back nine to finish with a 9-over par, 81.
Gillian Vance posted a 14-over par, 86 in the final round to give her a final scorecard of 83-86-86—225 to finish in 83rd place.
"Unfortunately Gillian struggled with her short game all week," Kelly said. "Which is usually one of her strengths."
Lilia Vu of UCLA earned medalist honors finishing as the only competitor under par at 1-under par 215. Two strokes back were Stanford's' Albane Valenzuela (21) and in third was Jennifer Chang of UCC. Allisen Corpuz (USC) and Mariel Galdiano (UCLA) tied for fourth place at 8-over par, 224 to round out the top-five individuals.
