Lisella & Kiernan Sweep Pac-12 Player Of The Week Honors

March 12, 2018 | Lacrosse

BOULDER — After starting the Pac-12 Conference schedule with a pair of wins, a duo of Colorado Buffaloes swept the conference awards. Sophomore Julia Lisella was named the defensive player of the week and senior Darby Kiernan was tabbed the offensive player of the week.

The Buffs recorded an 18-16 comeback win against No. 18 Stanford on March 9 and then defeated California 15-5 on March 11 to start the league slate a perfect 2-0.

Lisella had 10 or more saves in both of those wins. In the come-from-behind victory against No. 18 Stanford, Lisella allowed 12 goals in the first half, but limited the Cardinal to just four goals in the second half. She had 16 saves in the win, which tied for the fifth most in CU history. She earned eight saves in each half.

In the second game against Cal, Lisella allowed just five goals. It was the second time in three games the Buffs have held an opponent to five or fewer goals. She also made 11 saves, marking the third straight game she has had 10 or more saves. On the weekend, she recorded a .562 save percentage and faced 62 shots.

Kiernan also impressed, scoring 15 points (11 goals and four assists) in the two games while adding 16 draw controls and four ground balls. She helped to spark the Buffs' win against Stanford with eight points. Kiernan scored five goals for the third time this season and added three assists. She assisted on CU's first goal of the game and scored CU's sixth goal of the game with 2:20 left in the first half to cut the Stanford lead to six (12-6).

In the second half, Kiernan scored four goals, including three straight to put the Buffs within a goal (15-16) with 9:11 left to play. Kiernan then recorded an assist on the game-tying goal from Carly Cox at 7:54 and 51 seconds later, she had the assist on Jen Mistretta's game-winning goal.

In the 15-5 win over Cal, Kiernan tallied a career-best six goals, the second most in CU history. In addition, she added one assist for her third straight game with seven or more points. She also became CU's career points leader in the game, surpassing the previous best of 218. Kiernan currently has 223 points.

These are third and fourth league honors for the Buffs this season; the second for Kiernan as she was the offensive player of the week on February 26. Miranda Stinson was also tabbed the offensive player of the week on Feb. 12. Lisella is the first CU athlete to earn the defensive player of the week award.
