Buffs Open Jerry Quiller Classic With Four Wins

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field team opened up the 2018 outdoor season with four event titles here Friday at the 2018 Jerry Quiller Classic at Potts Field.
WHAT HAPPENED
Matthew Denton and Elisa Grandemange won the hammer throw events while Gunner Rigsby and Cheyenne Cheshier won the triple jump events.
Matthew Denton won the men's hammer throw at the Jerry Quiller Classic for the second straight year as he also won in 2017 tossing a very similar mark. In 2017, Denton won the event with a 179-9.75/54.80. Friday, he threw a 179-9.75/54.75 mark to win the event and start the season with a strong mark. Grayson Webber finished second on the day with a 171-3.0/52.19 PR mark while Caleb Penner (168-5.5/51.34) and Austin Swanson (167-3.25/50.98) finished third and fourth, respectively.
On the women's side of the hammer throw, a duo of Buffs finished in the top two spots. Elisa Grandemange took the event title with a 174-0.75/53.05 mark while teammate Mariah Walker came in second with a 138-7.75/42 toss. Grandemange also threw the Javelin and finished in third with a 120-5.5/36.71 mark.
Freshmen Gunner Rigsby and Cheyenne Cheshier opened up their collegiate outdoor season with wins in the triple jump. Rigsby won the men's event with a 48-1.25/14.66 mark. Cheshier won the women's event with a mark of 38-4.75/11.70. Sophomore Sarah Hopkins finished third in the women's event with a 35-5.25/10.80.
UP NEXT
Day two of the Jerry Quiller Classic begins Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with a handful of field events along with the men's 3,000-meter Steeplechase.
