Hurta, Nemirov And O'Loughlin Named UCHealth CU Athletes Of The Week
March 28, 2018 | General, Men's Golf, Track and Field, Lacrosse
BOULDER - Daniel O'Loughlin, Sage Hurta and Samantha Nemirov were all recognized as the UCHealth CU Athletes of the Week for their strong performances in golf, lacrosse, and outdoor track.
Sophomore Daniel O'Loughlin led the men's golf team to a third place finish in the inaugural Kansas State-Bighorn Invitational in Palm Desert, Calif. He spent much of the final round in the lead after opening with five birdies on his first eight holes. But some late trouble with a bogey and a double in a three-hole span ended his run at medalist honors, though he did birdie No. 18 to finish with a 3-under 69 for an 8-under 208 total (72-67-69). That tied him for second, his highest collegiate finish along with posting his best collegiate 54-hole score (he had a pair of fifth place efforts previously). O'Loughlin tied for the second-most birdies among all players with 17, tied for fourth in par-4 scoring (4-under) and tied for seventh in par-5 scoring (7-under). Colorado defeated four teams ranked ahead of them in the final standings.
Sophomore Sage Hurta set a new personal best in the 1500-meter run when she won the event at the Pac-12+/Big Ten Challenge with a time of 4:17.04, beating out 31 other competitors from a field that featured five ranked teams. In her first outdoor race of the season, the time she clocked is the fastest in the nation so far this spring. The next fastest 1500-meter run this year is 4:18.69 by Villanova's Nicole Hutchinson.
Junior Samantha Nemirov recorded a career-high six goals and seven points on Friday, helping the Buffs to a 14-9 victory at Oregon. She tallied five of her six goals in the second half as CU outscored the Ducks 8-3. The Buffs recorded a 6-0 run in the second half, and four of those goals came from Nemirov. She converted on both of her free-position attempts and is just the third Buff to record six or more goals in a single game. The six goals is tied for second in CU single game history (the record is seven) and her seven points is tied for sixth in CU single game history.
Also nominated this week: Robyn Choi (Women's golf), Eriana Henderson (Women's Outdoor Track and Field), Ryan Forsyth (Men's Outdoor Track and Field)
Sophomore Robyn Choi was Colorado's top performer at the PING/ASU Invitational, finishing in a tie for 11th place at even-par (216) over her three rounds. It was her eighth top 20 finish of the season. The highlight of her week was a 3-under 69 in the second round on Saturday, her second career round in the 60s.
Sophomore Eriana Henderson won the women's long jump with a mark of 20-01.75 (6.14) at the Pac-12+/Big Ten Challenge in Tempe last weekend, which featured a total of five ranked women's teams. Her mark was a personal best and longer than any jump recorded by a Buff in five years. It is also the 11th furthest long jump recorded in CU outdoor history. The mark ranks as the 19th furthest leap in the nation this year and the second furthest by any Pac-12 female athlete in the event.
Senior Ryan Forsyth won the men's 3000-meter run at the Pac-12+/Big Ten Challenge with a time of 8:14.41. He beat the runner-up in the event with a margin over 3 seconds. It is the second fastest time ever recorded by a Buffalo in the event.
