Golfers Open In 10th At Stanford's "The Goodwin"

Paul, Olkowski Lead Buffalo Attack On Day 1

SAN FRANCISCO — The University of Colorado men's golf team opened here Thursday in 10th place after the completion of the first round of Stanford's 49th Annual "The Goodwin," easily one of the toughest field assembled in college golf this regular season.

Host and No. 20 Stanford owns the lead after 18 holes, as the Cardinal recorded a 7-under 277 score.  That was one shot better than No. 46 Northwestern (278), with No. 9 Oklahoma and No. 31 Oregon tied for third (279).  No. 11 California and No. 24 UNLV round out the top five, both sitting at 2-under 282.

Colorado put a 3-over 287 on the scoreboard, thus is in 10th place and 10 strokes off the lead.  The Buffs are looking for a top finish in the event, as it boasts one of the deepest fields of the year, with six top 25 and 11 top 50 teams among the 25 schools competing.

Senior Yannik Paul paced the Colorado attack Thursday with a 1-under 70, which has him tied for 16th in the individual standings.  He had a fairly steady round on the 7,169-yard, par-72 TPC Harding Park Golf Club track, scoring four birdies and 11 pars against three bogeys.  He was within one stroke of par throughout his entire round and closed with one of his birdies to get it in to red numbers overall; it was his 53rd career round under par and his 62nd of par or better, as he continues to climb those all-time charts at CU (second and third, respectively).

Freshman Trevor Olkowski rejoined CU's travel squad this week and responded with an even-par 71, which has him tied for 26th.  His five birdies led the Buffaloes and also tied for the fifth-most in the 135-man field, while helping to counter some late trouble, as he had a double bogey and then a bogey in a three- hole span near the end of his round.  But he put those experiences aside and finished up with a birdie.

Senior Spencer Painton is tied for 61st after scoring a 2-over 73; CU's leader in pars over the last two seasons (663, or 62 percent of his holes played) was more of the same Thursday, as he had 14 pars with a birdie and three bogeys to earn his score.

Sophomore Daniel O'Loughlin, CU's Male Athlete of the Week for his runner-up finish in last week's Bighorn Invitational, fashioned a 2-over 73 and is also tied for 61st.  He was even through six holes but then scored three straight bogeys to turn at 3-over; he put three birdies in the books on the front nine (CU started on No. 10) against two more bogeys to finish under par on that side.

Senior John Souza struggled some in the opening round, firing a 6-over 77 to stand in 113th place.  Two-over after seven holes, he endured a pair of double bogeys over his next four holes and had another bogey to shoot up to seven on the plus side before rallying to play his last five holes at 1-under.

"TPC Harding Park is a very good course," CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  "Strategically it was really well done. You have to be really thoughtful with course management here and that is a strength of ours.

"We had really nice rounds today from Yannik and Trevor," he said.  "Daniel and Spencer did a nice job too, but just couldn't get many putts to fall for them.  John was off a bit today, but he battled throughout and he will be ready to go tomorrow.  There are a lot of good teams here and we feel we are in good position after the first 18 holes."

Stanford's Jeffrey Swegle fired an 8-under 63 to own a two-shot lead over Oregon's Norman Xiong.  Swegle actually opened with a bogey, was still 1-over after three, but then caught fire, birdying nine of his last 15 holes, including six on the back nine for a 29 on that side.  Fifteen players shot rounds in the 60s with 25 recording under par scores.

The second round is set for Friday, with Colorado again paired with Northwestern and San Francisco, except this time they will play in the morning (9:15 a.m. MDT) and start on the No. 1 tee.  The teams will then be reseeded for the third and final round, which will be played Saturday.

NOTES: The average score for the 69 rounds played in the morning was 73.93; for the 66 in the afternoon, it was 72.36 (and 73.16 overall for the day combined); the 11 top 50 schools in the field all teed off later in the day … The temperature was 56 degrees at the start of morning play, with it rising to 75 degrees for the afternoon wave … Colorado's five entrants tied for the third-most birdies (16) but tied for the fewest pars (52); the Buffs had 19 bogeys and three doubles on the remaining holes … CU finished with four birdies and a par on its last hole (the 525-yard, par-5 9th).  It by far played as the easiest hole in round one (-0.47 to par), whereas it's counterpart, No. 18, played the toughest (+0.46); the Buffs had three pars and two bogeys on that one … This is CU's ninth tournament of the season, but its first on a par-71 configuration; the first eight were all par-72 layouts.
