O'Loughlin, Olkowski Card 66s To Lead Friday's Attack
SAN FRANCISCO — The University of Colorado men's golf team had one of its best rounds of the season, and matched its top effort in the spring, and in the process jumped four spots into sixth in the standings after two rounds of Stanford's 49th Annual "The Goodwin."
No. 6 Oklahoma turned in the round of the tournament so far with a 15-under 269, which gave the Sooners a team score of 548 (20-under) through 36 holes. OU moved into the lead thanks to its four scorers all posting numbers in the 60s on Friday. No. 5 California is five back at 553, followed by No. 31 Oregon (558), No. 20, host and first round leader Stanford (560) and No. 24 UNLV (561). Then come the Buffaloes, in at 3-under 565.
Colorado tied its third-best gross score and 10th-best in relation to par with a 6-under 278 Friday, which also was the fourth best in the field for the second round. A top finish in here this weekend could propel CU up the rankings, as it boasts one of the deepest fields of the year, with six top 25 and 11 top 50 teams among the 25 schools competing. The Buffs are currently besting five of those teams, four of whom are ranked ahead of them.
Sophomore Daniel O'Loughlin and freshman Trevor Olkowski essentially tamed the 7,169-yard, par-72 TPC Harding Park Golf Club layout, each turning in their collegiate career-bests of 66 (5-under), and doing it in style with no bogeys. Olkowski stands tied for seventh with a 5-under 137 total, while O'Loughlin is tied for 10th at 3-under 139.
For Olkowski, he just missed tying the school's low round by a freshman, which is a 65 accomplished three times previously, though his 31 on the front nine matched the frosh low for a side, done just once before Friday (by Jeremy Paul in the 2013 UTEP Give 'Em Five Invitational). He opened with four birdies in his first six holes, while O'Loughlin shot 33 on both sides; each had five birdies and 13 pars for their round and both are playing the par-4 holes here at 2-under, tied for ninth in the 135-man field.
And as for the duo, it marked just the fourth time in school history that the Buffaloes counted two scores of 66 or better toward the team total for a round. The only other times came in the 2013-14 season, when Jeremy Paul shot 65 and brother Yannik a 66 in the first round of the aforementioned UTEP meet in the fall, and Ethan Freeman scoring a 65 and David Oraee a 66 in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in the spring. Then last year in Wyoming's Desert Intercollegiate, Jeremy Paul put a 64 into the books while Freeman posted a 66.
Senior Yannik Paul recorded a 1-over 72 for his second 18 here, and is in at even-par (142) heading into the final round; that has him tied for 27th. He, too, had 13 pars, starting with five in a row out of the chute until going bogey-birdie back-to-back on Nos. 6 and 7; he was 2-over on the day heading into the par-3 17th, but a birdie there brought him back to even for the tournament. He has played the tough par-3 holes here at 2-under, tied for best in the field.
Senior Spencer Painton opened with three straight bogeys and couldn't get things back down, though he settled down and played the final 15 holes at 2-over; he had 13 pars and five bogeys for a 5-over 76. That now has him tied for 92nd with a 7-over 149 score. His 27 pars are tied for the fifth-most in the field.
Senior John Souza shaved three strokes off his first round effort and turned in a 3-over 74 to stand at 9-over 151, but was only able to move up one spot into a tie for 112th in the standings. He had a bit of wild ride on the front nine, with four bogeys, three birdies and two pars to make the turn at 1-over.
"Really good rounds from Trevor and Daniel," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "No bogeys for each is quite an accomplishment. Even though it didn't show up on the scoreboard we saw lots of good things from everyone. We are in a good position going into tomorrow."
They were the sixth and seventh bogey-free rounds by a Buffalo this season, the second time for each. As a team, CU had 15 birdies, 61 pars and 14 bogeys combined with no holes worse than the one extra stroke.
Oregon's Norman Xiong took over the lead for medalist honors by shooting a second straight 65 for a 12-under 130 total; his 15 birdies are four more than anyone else in the field. Stanford's Jeffrey Swegle dropped into second after a par round Friday for an 8-under 134 score. Fifteen players are within 10 shots of the lead (and six of the runner-up spot).
The Buffaloes will be paired with host Stanford and UNLV for the third and final round Saturday, with play for their groups beginning at 1:55 MDT off the No. 1 tee.
NOTES: The three who share the record for the low round by a freshmen are Jeremy Paul, Ethan Freeman and Morton Toft Hansen (his came last year) … The average score for the field was a tad lower for the second round – 72.80 as compared to 73.16 for the first, with the average for 270 rounds played at 72.98 … The 18th hole again played the toughest for the second straight day (+0.41); the Buffs had seven pars and three bogeys on the way into the clubhouse (four and one on Friday) … Colorado continued to add to its school record for the most team rounds under par in a season, as Friday was its 20th (the old mark was 16 twice); it's also the record for rounds of par or better.No. 6 Oklahoma turned in the round of the tournament so far with a 15-under 269, which gave the Sooners a team score of 548 (20-under) through 36 holes.
