Seven Buff's Competed in the Bryan Clay Multi Invitational Meet in Azusa
BOULDER -- The Colorado track and field multi-athletes began their competition in the heptathlon and decathlon in Azusa yesterday. This is their first outdoor multi-meet of the season, so coaches and athletes are looking to demonstrate their abilities.
Sophomore Drianna Mustin and juniors Michaela Wenning and Maja Wichhart-Donzo are competing in the heptathlon for the women. Sophomore Davis Butte, freshman Aaron Carmichael, and junior Nate Gravelding are competing in the decathlon for the men.
The heptathlon started with the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, and 200-meter dash, and the decathlon began with the 100-meter dash, long jump, shot put and high jump. Â
After a long day of competing, Wichhart-Donzo came away with quite a few personal records. "She did some pretty impressive stuff, she ran a 14.12 in the 100-meter hurdles, which is the third fastest time ever run by a heptathlete in the heptathlon," said Lindsey Malone, CU's assistant coach.  "The last time was 21 years ago was by Heather Sterling Biglow and she was a multiple time all American for CU. Maja came back with a PR of 5-6½ in the high jump which is just under 5-7.  She nearly made the next height which is going to be pretty exciting because she is getting pretty close to qualifying for the first round of NCAA's."
Wichhart-Donzo went on to record a few more personal records, and Malone laughed and told me, "She came back with another PR in the shotput, threw an 11.48. Â She told me she was going to throw 11.50 meters which is pretty impressive to be able to come within 2 centimeters of your projected PR." And to close out Maja's amazing day of competition, she ran the second fastest 200-meter dash run by a buffalo in the past 21 years, and also set a personal record at 24.54. Following her six hours of competition, Maja had to complete a proctored exam in organic chemistry.
Michaela Wenning's two top ten finishes also played a major role in the Buff's finish for day one of the meet. "She also had an outstanding day, she ran a 14.68 which is a huge PR for her, and also it is eighth all time in a heptathlon, and then she jumped 5-8¾ in the high jump. That means she gets to go to the first round of the NCAAs in the open high jump, it also ties her with teammate Rajon O'Quinn. They both rank second in the Pac-12 right now at that height, so both of them are going to get to go to the NCAA high jump. It also puts her fourth all time on our lists. She came back with another huge PR in the shotput with 38 - ¼ which is nearly a two foot PR, finished off the day at 3189 which is also another huge PR for day one," Malone said.Â
On the men's side Andrew Ghizzone is leading the pack. Ghizzone recorded a PR in the shotput at 12 meters. Malone joked with him before he threw, "Hey, why don't you throw 12 meters today?" And sure enough, he threw 12 meters on the dot. He also had a PR in the high jump at 6-3 ½, and finished with a time of 49.12 in the 400-meters. "That is a really fast time for someone who has already been in competition at that point for six hours," Malone said. He finished the day at 3692, which is a huge first day PR. The men competing against him in his group are mostly all-Americans in the decathlon, so he has some good competition.
Â
Davis Butte is a second year decathlete for the Buffs. He set personal records in the 100-meter hurdles, long jump, high jump, and also the 400-meters, meaning he set PR's in four out of the five events he competed in today.
"Aaron Carmichael also had a very good day he went 3078 which is a huge PR for day one for him. He had a high jump PR in there and was otherwise very consistent," Malone said.
"Ultimately, for the highlights of the day, Andrew's score was very high for him, if he can pull off a second day, within a normal range he will be in the 7400 maybe 7500 which is a score that could maybe get him into the NCAA championships. Maja's score is getting close to getting into the NCAAs, and Michaela had a great day and she qualified for the first round of the NCAA's with her mark"
Today, the women will finish their competition with the long jump, javelin and 800-meter run. The men will finish their competition with the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500-meters. The competition is still far from over, and the Buffs are hoping to finish strong to close out their first outdoor multi meet.
