Golfers Remain In Third After Three Rounds Of Pac-12 Championships

April 24, 2018 | Men's Golf

Macdonald, Paul tied for fourth; Souza 12th

ROLLING HILLS ESTATES, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team survived golf's classic "moving day' Tuesday, holding pat in third place but inching closer to the lead after the third round of 59th Annual Pac-12 Conference Men's Golf Championships.

The No. 46 Buffaloes posted the third-best score Tuesday, a school-best 8-under 347 that improved their overall total to a 19-under 1,046.  That's just eight back of No. 23 and host Southern California (27-under, 1,038), while No. 22 Arizona State slipped ahead of the Buffs by registering a 14-under 341 to close 54 holes at 22-under 1,043.  California, the league's highest ranked team at No. 8, holds fourth at 12-under 1,053, while No. 12 Stanford slipped from second into fifth (1,054).

Colorado started on the No. 1 tee with Monday's leaders, USC and Stanford, and the Buffaloes played the side much better than in the first two rounds; CU's sextet played the front nine at a combined 17-over (plus-8 in the first round, plus-9 in the second) whereas on Tuesday, they came through at even par.  The five who scored were 7-over in the first and even in the second, while 3-under for the third.  CU went ahead and had another good run on the back nine to pull four strokes closer to the lead by day's end.

Senior Yannik Paul and sophomore Ross Macdonald are tied for fourth individually, as both are in at 8-under par 205, each posting three straight rounds in the 60s here.  Paul turned in a 3-under 68 in moving up from seventh place, while Macdonald turned in CU's low round of the day, a 4-under 67, to move up four spots from a tie for eighth; it was also tied for the fourth-best score Tuesday in the 72-man field.

Paul had five birdies and 11 pars and just two bogeys Tuesday and now has seven straight subpar rounds, one shy of the school mark he set earlier this spring, with six of those in the 60s, the second-longest streak in CU history after seven by his older twin Jeremy that he set two springs ago.  He has a team-best 15 birdies, tied for the fourth-most in the field, and has played the par-5 holes the best of anyone here, a collective 6-under par for the six of them.

Macdonald, who earned the sixth and final spot on the Pac-12 travel squad, now has four straight subpar efforts, and six in his last nine rounds.  He has 13 birdies and 36 pars, with just five holes worse than par (all bogeys).  Playing the best golf of his collegiate career, he has played the par-4s at 6-under, tied for third-best in the field.

Senior John Souza matched Paul's numbers in the third round (five birdies, 11 pars, two bogeys) for his 68, which has him in at 5-under 208 and tied for 12th.  He has just five holes worse than par here, and is playing the tough par-3 holes here at 2-under, tied for the best along all competitors.  His 38 pars are the ninth-most.

The Buffs are the only team with three players in the top 15, and all are in the top 12.

Sophomore Daniel O'Loughlin overcame some back problems late Monday to card a 1-over 72 to stand in a tie for 48th at 4-over 217.  He had two birdies and 14 pars with a bogey and double to fashion his score, as he was 3-over at the turn but played the back nine at 2-under.  His 39 pars through three rounds are tied for fifth in the field.

Senior Spencer Painton is tied for 52nd after recording a second straight 72, as he is in at 5-over 218.   He had two birdies and 13 pars Tuesday, with three bogeys, and has played the par-5s well here, as his collective 5-under is second-best overall.

Freshman Trevor Olkowski carded a 4-over 75 to end the day at 6-over 219; he had two birdies and 11 pars against four bogeys and a double in his third round.  He is tied for 55th overall, 15th out of the 20 freshmen competing here.

"Overall we are pleased with the score," " CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  "We played the front nine much better than the first two rounds and then had a nice back nine to finish it off.  Yannik, Ross, and John had really nice days with Spencer and Daniel being key for the score. Trevor was a bit off his game but he will be better tomorrow."

Southern Cal's Justin Suh is the individual leader, as a 6-under 65, tied for the day's best score, has him pulling away from the pack.  He's in at 16-under par 197 heading into the final round, six shots ahead of Arizona's George Cunningham (203, -10).  Koichiro Ishika of Arizona State is third (9-under 204), with Paul and Macdonald among a five-way tie for fourth.

"Our goals for tomorrow include committing to hitting it in the correct spots, competing, and believing in ourselves," Edwards said.  "If we pay attention to that and not our score it should be a good day."

The fourth and final round is set for a 9 a.m. (MDT) start on Wednesday; Colorado will once again be paired in the lead group with USC and Arizona State, and will tee off on No. 1 beginning at 10:06 a.m. MDT.

NOTES: Defending champion and No. 30 Oregon is 11th, some 39 strokes off the pace … The average score through three rounds is 71.42, as it was 71.71 for the third round … Twenty-seven players are under par through 54 holes, with another three sitting at even par … CU's third round 347 (-8) was both the lowest gross score as well as tying the third-best in relation to par by Colorado in a 6-score-5 format; the best remains an 11-under 349 in the 2016 UCLA Gifford Intercollegiate.  CU was 9-under (351) in the second round of the 1992 Fresno State Lexus Classic and 8-under (352) in the 1981 BYU Cougar Classic.  Thus combined with Monday's first round 7-under 348, the Buffaloes have recorded two of their top five efforts in a 6-for-5er … Colorado is tied for first on the tough par-3s (5-over) and leads on the par-5s (23-under) and is sixth on the par-4s (plus-12).
