Buffaloes Finish Sixth At Pac-12 Championship

Three Buffs Finish In Top 11

SEATTLE – The University of Colorado women's golf team shot 11-over, 299, on Tuesday to secure a sixth place finish at the 2018 Pac-12 Conference Women's Golf Championship at the Broadmoor Golf Club.

Colorado's 299 tied for the third-highest score in the final round, dropping the No. 20 ranked Buffaloes two spots in the standings from Monday's second round, finishing at 17-over, 881, for the 54-hole tournament.

Senior Brittany Fan led the Buffaloes with a 1-under, 215, for the championship, tying for seventh overall.  Sophomore Kirsty Hodgkins had Colorado's low score of the tournament with a 3-under, 69, in the final round to finish tied for 11th overall, sharing that spot with classmate Robyn Choi at 1-over, 217.

"Tough day today," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "The course was a bit tougher today with faster greens and tough hole locations. Although we're disappointed with the finish today, sixth place in this conference is nothing to be ashamed of. We look forward to the upcoming NCAA regionals."

Colorado won't have to wait long to find out its NCAA fate as the selections for the 2018 Championships will be announced on Wednesday, April 25, at 3:30 p.m. MT, live on the Golf Channel. The Buffaloes, who have been ranked in or near the nation's Top 20 all season, are in good position to be one of the 72 teams selected to one of four regional sites for competition May 7-9.

No. 3 UCLA ran away with its second-straight Pac-12 title, defeating rival No. 4 USC by 12 strokes. The Bruins were the only team in the red for the championship, finishing at 6-under, 860. USC was second at 8-over, 872, one stroke better than No. 6 Stanford and No. 13 Arizona who tied for third.

UCLA's Patty Tavatanakit took medalist honors after winning a one-hole playoff over teammate and defending Pac-12 individual champion Lilia Vu. The Bruins duo both shot 8-under, 208, for the tournament, two strokes better than Arizona's Haley Moore.

Hodgkins shot out of the gate at 3-under through the first seven holes. She birdied a trio of par-4s on the front, logging red numbers at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 7. She fell back to 1-under after back-to-back bogeys to close out the front nine.

After two pars to open the back, Hodgkins put together her best string of the tournament. She started with a birdie on the par-4 No. 12, and then recorded her first eagle of the season at the par-5, No. 13. Hodgkins moved to 5-under on the day with her fifth birdie of the round at the par-3 No. 14.

At that point, playing even over the final four holes would have given her the tournament's low round (5-under, 67) however she logged back-to-back bogeys at No. 16 and No. 17, and made par on No. 18 to finish off her 69.

Fan, who had 10 holes of birdie or better in the first two rounds, managed only one red number on Tuesday, that coming with a birdie on the par-5 No. 13, a hole she played at 4-under during the week.

She was 1-over early with a bogey at the par-4 No. 2. Fan made par over the next six holes before falling to 2-over with a bogey at the par-4 No. 9. She moved back to 1-over after her birdie at No. 13, but couldn't climb up from there, settling for a 2-over, 74, on the day.

Choi also finished 2-over in the final round. She fell behind early as back-to-back bogeys put her at 2-over through three holes. Choi was even over the next three and climbed back to 1-over after a birdie at the par-4 No. 7. A double-bogey on the par-4 No. 9 sent her back to 3-over.

Choi had a steady back, closing out the final nine holes at 1-under. She birdied the par-3 No. 11 to get back to 2-over and finished her round with seven straight pars.

Freshman Alisha Lau endured her high round of the week, carding a 10-over 82. She was only 2-over through five holes, but ran into trouble heading for the turn. Lau birdied the par-4 No. 7, but a double bogey at No. 6 and a pair of bogeys at No. 7 and No. 8 put her at 5-over. Lau had a similar back nine. After a birdie at No. 13, she was 4-over through the final five holes to finish the tournament in 47th place at 16-over, 232.

Junior Gillian Vance shot 11-over, 83, in her final round. She was even through three, but shot 6-over the rest of the front nine, playing only one hole – the par-4 No. 7 – at par. Vance fared slightly better on the back at 5-over. She finished the tournament in 54th place with a 29-over, 245.

"Brittany and Robyn didn't have their A-game today, but fought really hard for their rounds," Kelly said. "Kirsty really had it going today but unfortunately had bogeys on No. 16 and No. 17, but made a good par on No. 18. Alisha and Gillian had rough days, but they'll bounce back."

PAC-12 AWARDS: Choi was named All-Pac-12 while Fan earned honorable mention All-Pac-12 honors. It was the first league postseason recognition for both. Choi is Colorado's fifth All-Pac-12 women's golfer while Fan is the fifth Buffalo to receive honorable mention.

NOTES: Hodgkins' 69 matches Colorado's fourth-best conference tournament individual round joining Emily Talley's second round performance at the 2012 Pac-12 Championships. It was her best round of the spring and fourth in the 60s this season. It was her best round since shooting 69 in the final round of the UW Edean Ihlanfeldt Invite in October. Hodgkins shot her 10th sub-par round of the season, tying Jess Wallace (2010-11) and Alex Stewart (2011-12) for the second-most in team history…Fan's 215 ties for the fourth best 54-hole score for a Buffalo at a conference championship. It was her 11th top 20 finish of the season, tying Wallace (2010-11) and Esther Lee (2015-16) for the best mark in team history…Choi's 37 pars tied for the most in the championship…Through 18 spring rounds only one stroke separates Choi and Fan. Choi has 1,321 strokes (73.39 avg) while Fan is at 1,322 (73.44 avg).
